Celebration of Learning & Extra Curricular
HSC Intensive Studio Practice program
Words by Rory Cotsios
In January and April of this year I had the brilliant opportunity of attending the HSC Intensive Studio Practice program at National Art School (NAS) in Darlinghurst. Senior students from all over the state attended for their various media of choice (painting, life-drawing, ceramics, photography etc), and it was really lovely to work alongside and get to know so many new, like-minded people. The course I did was in painting. The tutor was wonderful, we all all learned so much from him, and I felt that I really developed my practice, ideas, had so many insightful conversations, and finished with so many things I am proud of and enjoyed making. We also got the chance to exhibit our work at the end of the course, and I loved looking at all the other classes' work and exploring the other spaces and studios within the school. It was so interesting to see how art education may look at a tertiary level, especially as I’d like to pursue something in the Fine Arts field after high school- even more so after this program. I’ll always be so grateful for my experience at NAS- the skills and friends I gained are unforgettable.
Kids Giving Back Program
Niamh Moynihan, Year 8, participated in community programs at Kids Giving Back during the 1st Term of this year and the recent April school holidays. She gave her time to undertake a range of activities that contributed to meet the needs of vulnerable people in our community
This student is among over 500 young people who produced over 7000 hot meals, salads, fruit kebabs, breakfast boxes, snack packs, care packs and decorated tote bags which were distributed to 13 charities around Sydney. She was also especially helpful in folding and packing new clothes for over 8000 vulnerable people, many of whom were affected by this year’s floods.
If you're interested in the Kids Giving Back program, see their website here.
What's Happening With Drama?
It is wonderful to be back with all classes and Ensembles able to work to the complete range of practical activities. Teaching drama and not being able to access the space or interact was very limiting so the classrooms are once again buzzing. There’s a lot going on, so here is just a glimpse.
Year 11 Drama are exploring Australian Drama & Theatre and they are using Yve Blake’s Musical “Fangirls” as their starting point. They are looking at the play from the point of view of design and staging. Year 11 are working as an ensemble to bring together extracts from the play as an in-school presentation.
Year 10 Drama are preparing for assessment based upon their exploration of the experience of our First Nation people as illustrated in Wesley Enoch & Deborah Mailman’s collaboration “The Seven Stages of Dreaming”. The play charts the experiences of our indigenous people and through performance and critical analysis of their own presentation ideas, students will explore the issues and gain historical insight and understanding.
Year 9 Drama are exploring the art of Physical Theatre and extending their ability to express ideas through use of the space and their bodies interacting in the space. They are looking at the work of Frantic Assembly and challenging each other to communicate through the medium of the physical.
Year 8 Drama are getting to know Ms Williamson and building their sense of group as a consequence of the change of teacher. They are exploring improvisation, comedy and Playbuilding.
Year 7 Drama need to demonstrate their understanding of the relationship between the actor and their audience. The ability to clearly communicate to their audience their sense of character/role, situation and start and finish are a must as they bring together their own scenarios for assessment.
Members of Year 7 Ensemble and the Year 8 Drama Ensemble are exploring the idea of what it means to be female and the expectations and norms are in our society based upon gender.
We are working towards a performance of our ideas by the end of term or into the start of term 3.
Career Matter
Looking forward to meeting parents on Thursday at the Year 10 subject selection information session and the Careers event in the evening.
Please check out the Careers website found on the school’s website.
Currently in Careers we are running our guest speaker program. We have a number of speakers from University, TAFE and private colleges coming to Canterbury Girls High. Students in Year 11 & 12 are able to sign up for their preferred speaker and learn about the multitude of options available post school. Year 10 are able to join us for select speakers.
Today we had Aditi, a fifth year Engineering student at UNSW promoting the many areas of Engineering as a career. Students asked many great questions, and I hope they found it informative. Thank you to UNSW and Aditi.
