Readjusting to 'Normal' Life

With the improved State and National management of the Covid-19 pandemic, 2022 has brought a return to previously enjoyed activities across various spheres of life for young people and families alike. For many, this provides a sense of relief, whilst for others, and especially young people, readjusting to ‘ordinary’ life has generated an increase in stress and anxiety. Here at 65 Wattle, we have noticed the effects these adjustments have placed on not only young people but families as a whole.

Families provide a safe and integral place for young people to express their views and explore their individuality. Well-functioning family systems provide an environment where values are instilled, boundaries are provided, and spontaneity is encouraged. When functioning well, family units provide an opportunity for young people to both co-regulate with caregivers and self-regulate through self-soothing.

For these reasons and many more, the functioning of the family unit is integral to the functioning of our young people.  With this in mind, 2022 provides a perfect opportunity for parents and families to stop and reflect on their current functioning and address unresolved or emerging difficulties.

Parenting and family-based programs provide a fantastic opportunity for caregivers to come together and feel supported by other parents and learn up to date strategies for managing issues that inevitably arise within family systems. Some local and national programs are listed below should you wish to seek support:

Triple P parenting program

The Triple P parenting program is an evidence-based parenting program supporting families to better manage emotional difficulties and disruptive behaviour in children and teenagers. Since 2020, the Victorian government has funded this program making it free for all Victorian families. The program is fully online and available 24/7. Families obtain access to the program for 12 months after registration. The Triple P Program offers flexibility and the opportunity to ‘go at your own pace’. You can access the Triple P Program here:

Tuning into Kids/Teens

Tuning into Kids/Teens teaches caregivers and families to promote and foster emotional intelligence in their children and teenagers. It provides practical strategies for parents to better connect with their children and strengthen relationships. The Tuning into Kids/Teens program is currently being provided by CatholicCare Bendigo. Places are limited and program participation costs $60 per person or $30 for concession holders. If you are experiencing significant difficulties within your family, please don’t hesitate to speak with your GP or other health provider.
