Students have been tinkering in Makerspace Sandpit this term by creating paper plate roller coasters, building paper planes, creating water vessels out of marshmallows, foil and skewers, invention challenge, creating oobleck (slime) and testing the ratio on speakers. They have reflected on their learning through their e-portfolios and assessed on enterprise skills such as collaboration, communication, technology, critical thinking, creativity and complex problem solving. Students have been working in various groups and roles including: engineer, technologist, mathematician, scientist and group leader.

As part of the Makerspace Sandpit unit, students travelled to Canberra to be immersed in hands on activities provided by Questacon, The National Museum of Australia and the CSIRO Discovery Centre. Students learnt about the different aspects of colour and light, the earth, Australian history, research conducted by the CSIRO including the discovery of wifi and discovered old and new inventions.

 

During Term 2, students will be learning about coding through the Mbot Golfing Challenge. They will be placed in teams of three and choose roles such as marketer, coding specialist and group leader. Students will gain “real-life” skills and present their final work during the final competition.

 

Did you know that the NSW Government are trialling drones to detect sharks as part of its $16 millionShark Management Strategy. Future jobs will involve some level of computational thinking and potentially programming to some degree.
