COMMITTEE 4 WAGGA - STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

This year Gabe Shaw, Blake Smith and Renae Beukers from Year 11 have been selected to participate in the Wagga School Leaders Program.

The aim of The Wagga School Leaders Program is to build a generation of confident and capable young leaders from within our community.  The skills that the students gain and the relationships they form will be an invaluable asset for the future and their working careers.

Module 1: Kapooka Army Base Wagga Wagga

As we arrived we were introduced by the Commandant where we heard stories about his life so far and how he has developed as a leader in the Army. The Commandant also explained that his position as a leader in the Army comes with great responsibilities.

The first challenge of the day was ‘The Tower’. It was a horrifying experience for some, whereas for others it was an exhilarating experience. The first part of the challenge was to ascend a 20m non stable cave ladder to the abseil down a 20m face.  It was designed to grasp our inner self leadership by being able to contain your emotions, whether it be nervousness or anxiety, to be able to effectively comfort and support your fellow peers.

Although not all enjoyed the experience as much as others, it was definitely an experience to be remembered by all.

The second challenge of the day was the boulder wall. It was a challenge designed to target clear communication. We were put into pairs, with one person blindfolded and the other giving directions from below. The aim was to deliver clear communications directing the person across the wall without falling.  It was a great learning experience enabling us to recognise that giving the directions is easy but to deliver them in an effective manner that is understood is difficult.

After an ‘Army lunch’ we then went on to complete an equipment challenge designed to target communication whist being a team leader in difficult situations. In teams of six we were to carry a wooden pole, two water containers, ammunition and an ammunition storage container over a 500m course up and back. Overall it was a memorable, challenging and enjoyable day and certainly one to never forget.
