Diocesan Girls Football

Senior Girls Football has kicked off again for 2018, playing in three rounds and a final at Yoogali, Griffith. The girls played well in each game combining across the park to defend strongly and create many goal scoring opportunities.
The first game Mater Dei came up against Xavier, Albury, winning 4 -1. The girls began the game with confidence with plenty of work from the back line, feeding into the midfield and striker Brooke Gaylor soon opened up the scoreboard, scoring the first of three goals for the match, with Ella, a Kildare player completing the scorecard with a 4 - 1 result.
Round two Mater Dei began the game strongly against St Francis, Leeton. The backline featured strongly, led by Claudia Di Trapani, dispersing any attack from the Leeton strikers. Again, the girls worked well as a team with Brandy Nicholson and Ingrid Weir playing consistently and in combination with Tia Lyons proved a solid midfield. Brooke Gayler scored three goals, with Bree Lyons also capitalising on a Leeton mistake to score, with goalkeeper Mackenzie Gough ending the match with a clean sheet.
Round three against Marian Catholic College was a much tougher encounter and was the prelude to the final match. Both teams played well across the park with the backlines in both teams holding strong. Despite the girls best efforts Mater Dei conceded 2 goals to end the game losing 2 - 0.
In the finals Mater Dei faced Marian, and after another tight tussle, Marian again came away winners with a 2 - 0 final score. At the conclusion of the game Brandy Nicholson, who played with consistency in all positions, striker Brooke Gayler and centre midfielder Tia Lyons were named to play in the Open Diocesan Football teams for the NSWCCC Championships, congratulations to each of the girls on their selections and thank you to the team who played on the day, their sportsmanship and teamwork contributed to the success of the day.
