From the Principal Class Team

Curriculum Day - Friday 26 February
A reminder that Friday 26 February is a Curriculum Day at the school. On this day, no students are required to attend. Staff will be investigating ways in which we can increase student voice in teaching and learning.
Beacon Ambassadors
It is with great pleasure that we introduce this year's Year 10 Beacon Ambassadors, Cindy Nguyen, Tina Huynh, Kelly Ha and Kellie Phan.
Cindy Nguyen
Tina Huynh
Kelly Ha
Kellie Phan
They have identified themselves as students who want to develop their leadership skills and capabilities. We look forward to working closely with them as they lead the Beacon program under the guidance of Mr Brendan McFarland.
Business and Community Partnerships
The College has a well structured business and community partnerships program in place. We work closely with the Australian Business and Community Network, Beacon Foundation and the Smith Family to run a suite of excellent programs which support students from a range of year levels.
One aspect of this work is our Business and Community Partnerships Committee. This committee meets twice per term after school to support our Beacon Ambassadors and the signature events.
Any local business or community members who would like to attend these meetings and support the students, would be very welcome. Please contact Mr Craig Jennings, Assistant Principal, for further information.
Class of 2015 Pathways
Once again our graduating class of 2015 achieved excellent pathway results. 60% of students are enrolled at University, with a further 33% at TAFE and other further education providers. 4% are working full time, while 3% are still working on securing their desired pathway.
These results are a tribute to the students and their families.
We would also like to acknowledge all the hard work and support provided by our Careers/MIPS team, Mr Jon Kortuem, Ms Cathy Armstrong and Ms Colleen Lynch.
VCE Academic Excellence- 2015
Congratulations to Myers Nguyen for his outstanding VCE results in 2015. Myers achieved an ATAR score of 98.5.
Since Year 7, Myers has been an extremely diligent, disciplined and well organised learner, receiving Academic Achievement Awards in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.
His perseverance and willingness to question and seek help with his work were also important qualities in terms of his success. He has also participated in a range of extracurricular activities such as the Australian Mathematics competition, receiving a Certificate of distinction consecutively over three years. As a Year 9 student in 2012, he was awarded The Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award. In Year 10 Myers was the recipient of two prestigious awards: the Roger Martin Science Award and the ABCN National Award.
As a Year 11 student in 2014 he undertook two Year 12 subjects (Accounting and Further Maths) and achieved a study score of 40+ in both of them.
Myers is an excellent public speaker and has represented the College during the Debaters Association of Victoria Schools Interschool Competition. He has also shown excellent leadership qualities and was elected as Rosewell Vice-House Captain in 2013 and House Captain in 2015.
Additionally, he has a strong social conscience and has been involved in fundraisers helping people living in poverty in Vietnam, as well as raising funds for the construction of temples.
We wish Myers well for the commencement of his Degree in Biomedicine at the University of Melbourne.
Year 12 Study Camp
Year 12 students attended the highly anticipated Year 12 Study Camp on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 February at the University of Melbourne.
The objectives of the camp were to prepare the students for the demands and expectations of Year 12, promote and broaden their experiences in a range of study habits designed to support them to achieve their best, and for students to gain some insight into university life. Students had the opportunity to listen to a motivational presentation by best-selling Australian author Archie Fusillo, who spoke to them about the value of stories in shaping our lives and connecting people, irrespective of backgrounds. His focus on immigration resonated with the students who had their own stories to tell and his strong connection with family was very poignant. He encouraged students to believe in themselves and work hard to achieve their goals.
Students also participated in a range of team building activities and workshops specifically targeted to VCE or VCAL courses. St Albans SC alumni, currently studying at the university led tours of the campus.
The camp is a fun and engaging way for students to get into the mindset of Year 12 whilst developing the skills and confidence to deal with the pressures of the final year of secondary school. Our students approached the meticulously organised program with enthusiasm and commitment, both important qualities which will help them to achieve their goals this year.
Our sincere thanks to all supervising staff, the Senior Sub School team for their organisation of the camp, as well as to our own expert teachers who presented informative workshops on a range of topics including Pathways, Careers and Pathways, Sexual Health and Wellbeing and Effective Study Skills.
