Wellbeing Article: Mental Health Week
Last week, because we believe the Mental Health of our staff and student’s is paramount, CSC joined in with the rest of the Mount Alexander Shire and celebrated Mental Health Week. The week consisted of several mental health activities including:
• Lift the Hat day launched us into mental health week on the Friday prior
• Castlemaine Secondary’s Got Talent Show, where some of the very bravest and talented students filled the lunch break with the sounds of music and dancing. There were 3 equal winners in the competition- all scoring the same points! They were the band Scaface, Haru Pitcher and Otis Showell-Roche who performed with Sonny Henderson and Julian Scoble
• The school got on board with the Mount Alexander shire’s Random act of Kindness Project, many students and teachers being encouraged to do a random act of kindness for someone in their life.
• Judy Shaw from The Forge came to the school and did some relaxing yoga with the students.
• One of CSC’s very brave and respected Year 12 students, Bethany Robertson, shared her story with other students in the school on dealing with mental health issues, her recovery and the writing of her zine (published this year). From this, the students were able to learn some very valuable information on looking after their mental health and getting help if things aren’t going well.
• Friday Lunch time was all about having fun, there was a BBQ, henna, face painting, giant sumo wrestling, and Mental Health ices creams for example ice cream cone with a flake , called ‘Don’t flake out, bounce back and try again!’
Here is Zeppelin Valentine breaking some moves at the talent show
App of the Month: 365 Happy Days
How’s it work?
365 Happy Days is an app that taps into positive psychology research to remind you to focus on the good. Numerous studies have shown that breaking negative, or even neutral, trains of thought and resting the mind on a positive area can be extremely beneficial to mental and physical well-being.
The 365 Happy Days app is set up for reminders that pop up on your phone as alerts with a positive quote or an action to take with a bit about the research to help motivation to take the action.
Where do you get it?
It’s free to download from Google Play and the Apple App Store.
