Welcome Back

A warm welcome back to our staff, students and families as we start term 2. Although the weather has started cool and a little damp, we still need to be wearing hats until the end of April, even if it is to keep our heads dry. A reminder that hair accessories can only be in school colours.

Tragedy in Sri Lanka

As the impact of the tragic events in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday continues to unfold, our thoughts are with the victims and their families. If you need support please ask for help and if your family has been impacted by these tragic events please let our staff know.

One of Victoria’s greatest strengths is its history of multiculturalism. We’re proud of the diversity within our schools and early childhood settings. Melbourne has a large Sri Lankan population and this is reflected in our schools and their communities.

Sports Tops for Level 4, 5 and 6

A new sports top designed last year for Levels 4, 5 and 6 is now available for purchase from PSW. The design was voted on by students in 2018. The top is to be worn on sports days, interschool sport for level 5 and 6, competition days such as cross country or athletics, and on the day a student has a PE lesson.

This sports top is required in level 4 and 5 in 2019. However, it is an optional uniform for grade 6 only in 2019. I do encourage students to be in uniform at all times. This is an addition to our school uniform that our students are very excited about.

Portfolios and 3 Way Conferences

Students are sharing their holiday stories and setting goals for this term. All students are working on portfolios that will have assessment tasks and self-reflection in all areas of the curriculum and specialist areas. These portfolios will be sent home towards the end of the term and are to be looked at with the student reports accessed through the Sentral Parent Portal. Last year we introduced learning portfolios, and the next step is the introduction of the 3 Way Conferences at the end of this semester - this change in reporting reflects our focus on students having a greater ownership of their learning, what we refer to as Student Agency. Students will be attending the interviews to share their learning and goals set for term 3.

There will be a slighter longer interview time allowing the student to speak and share their learning. Parents will have the option of speaking to the teacher without their child present for a period of the interview. I will be speaking to P&F, Class Ambassadors and School Council about the change during this term and more information through our newsletter.

Foundation 2020 Information Night - Thursday, 16th May 7pm-8.30pm and Tours

Planning is well underway for 2020 Foundation with weekly tours and information packs in the local preschools and day care centres. Families appreciate the opportunity to see the school in action with students with staff engaged in their learning and parent involvement evident throughout.

The Foundation 2020 Information evening is geared to foundation students starting school in 2020. A range of topics, including the curriculum program, specialist programs, enrolment process, preparation for school and more will be discussed. A light supper will conclude the evening.

NAPLAN (National Assessment of Literacy and Numeracy)

Preparations for NAPLAN are under way.  Students in Level 3 and Level 5 are preparing for NAPLAN (National Assessment Program of Literacy and Numeracy). This preparation is a regular part of the daily instruction in the classroom and will include the types of questions students may encounter in the test. I acknowledge the importance of this national assessment and I suggest if parents have any concerns about this assessment they speak to their child’s classroom teacher.

Tuesday, 14th May – Writing and Language Conventions

Wednesday 15th May - Reading

Thursday, 16th May - Numeracy

On the day, it is advisable for students to be well rested and on time at school, as in most cases the testing will take place before recess. For further information please refer to the website:  www.naplan.edu.au

Class Ambassadors Meeting Wednesday May 8th at 9am in the staffroom- Everyone welcome

Thank you to all the parents who have given time to be a class ambassador and/or be involved in our Parents and Friends.

The parents attending the upcoming meeting will have an opportunity to give feedback on the proposed Capital Expenditure list. The list has a number of projects that fundraising, savings and grants can contribute to. We are seeking input from staff, students and parents to help determine a priority list. Our school council will look at the priority lists at the School Council May meeting. P&F representatives will catching us up on the events for this term during the meeting as well.
