Year 11 and 12 Science Subjects
Both Year 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Investigating Science students have undertaken their Yearly Examinations to complete the final requirements of the Preliminary and HSC courses. Year 12 will continue to practice past paper examinations and undertake revision activities in the lead up to their Higher School Certificate Examination next term. Year 11 students will be revising key areas and skills which require further development to prepare them for the start of the Year 12 Course next term.
Year 10
In Science, this term Year 10 have been learning about Ecosystems and Evolution. Students completed a Research Task on the Evolution Topic. Students also undertook the online VALID testing to assessment their ability to work scientifically, apply scientific content and problem solve. Results from this testing will be sent directly home similar to NAPLAN as it is an external assessment completed across NSW.
Year 9 Australian Museum Excursion
Year 9 Science students visited the Australian Museum to participate in a presentation led by Adam Spencer. Our students engaged in a discussion panel with a group of scientists from a variety of STEM fields. They also had the opportunity to explore the Museum’s Science Exhibition with a variety of companies showcasing the latest technology and resources being used in a variety of STEM industries.
Year 8 Energy Efficient Home Assessment
Year 8 students this term worked hard on their assessment tasks which involved researching types of energy forms and ways energy can be transferred and transformed. Students then applied their understanding to design and then create an energy efficient home with features that can be used to reduce energy consumed by households. This project built their awareness on human impacts to the environment and ways to reduce our impact and save money on power bills.
Year 7 STEM
Year 7 STEM students created a Photo Story of animals and their adaptations to their ecosystem as part of their Out of Africa themed unit.
CAPA - Creative and Performing Arts
It has been an extremely busy start to Term 4 for the Creative and Performing Arts Faculty. The most important development has been the arrival of our new dance teacher Ms Allyssia Lloyd. Ms Lloyd has immediately jumped into a hectic co-curricular schedule – leading Dance Ensemble, choreographing our musical (more to come about that later) and supporting our Aboriginal Dance Ensemble as they prepare to perform at Schools Spectacular. This year marks the last Schools Spectacular for Drew Walker who has continued to help lead our dancers following the conclusion of her Higher School Certificate examinations. We wish her all the best and have great confidence that she will continue to take on leadership responsibilities in the local Aboriginal community.
In Visual Arts, our Year 10 and 11 students have been given the opportunity to attend an interactive viewing of a new exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales featuring the work of Australian artist Ben Quilty. Part of this experience includes meeting the artist himself and gaining personal insights into his artistic style and influences. This will assist students when they return to their classrooms to complete case studies on Ben Quilty.
Staff and students are currently enjoying our own exhibition of Year 11 artworks in the Administration block. In Week 3, an opening was held which also featured a presentation of Photographic works and performances from our Year 11 Music class. This was well attended by staff who thoroughly enjoyed the event. A key component of the exhibition was the work of our Entertainment students who helped bump in and out for the event. This was just one of many opportunities for our first Entertainment class to complete work placement hours. One unexpected request emerged at late notice from our feeder primary school – Walters Road Public School. Without any fuss, the Entertainment students willingly donated their own time to help support the WRPS Showcase. Part of this event involved mentoring the primary school’s tech crew. We look forward to collaborating further after the success of this event.
The end of 2019 is shaping up to be busier than ever. The clear highlight will be the premiere of our school musical Aladdin JR. The musical features classic songs from the Disney films including: A Whole New World, One Jump and Friend Like Me. We have assembled an amazing cast with students represented from the High School, Intensive English Centre and Learning Assistance Faculty. We will be putting on two shows in Week 10 on Monday and Tuesday evening at 7:00pm. Tickets can be purchased online from Try Booking:
We can’t wait to see the whole school supporting this momentous event to help celebrate the end of another fantastic CAPA year at Evans High School.
