Our Queen of Chess

"[Chess] is not merely an idle amusement (since) life is a kind of chess, in which we have often points to gain, and competitors or adversaries to contend with..."
Benjamin Franklin

Year 11

This year, the Girl's State final for chess was held online, and hosted by Northern Star Chess.

It was a challenging but fun day to compete against other girls! The competitors were all around the same age, and from various schools including Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar School, Suzanne Cory High School and Fintona Girls' School.

Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar school came first with 13.5 points and Suzanne Cory High School as the runner up with 9 points. Our school came 4th out of 9 other schools with 7 points due to one participant: this is why we need more girls to join chess club and participate in these sorts of tournaments!

We played 7 games overall [in the tournament], the second and last games were the most challenging.  Having blundered a horse and a pawn, this was overcome when my opponent made worse blunders than I did, and obtained a poor position.

This is what chess is about.  Even though you may not win, you can pick up tactics and strategies to use against your opponents in the following games .

Most games were very nerve-racking till the very end, which makes for a very satisfying victory. Overall, the games lasted around an average of 30 to 40 moves where each player had 10min on their clock with 2 second increments.

Even if you have little to no experience in chess, Chess Club offers a non-formal structure where you can play with your friends, learn and focus on particular openings, middle game, and end game tactics - it's a lot of fun!

Congratulations to Natasha on her great success a the girls Chess state final recently.  Natasha demonstrated a flawless Victory, (7 out of 7 games) to win the a Girls State Chess Final.

It chalks up another excellent performance by Natasha, to add to her collection of medals.  She has been the best student performer in the school all year and instrumental in helping the school to win two school tournament trophies over past years!

We are extremely proud of Natasha's efforts, flying the flag for BSC, and making all the right moves!

BSC hopes to  host a tournament in 2022, as we have in past years.  If students are interested, the Chess Club  CCP is open to all students and welcomes all comers - whether you want to learn, or just to have a fun game. Come join us!
