House Committee

I have really enjoyed leading the House Committee this year and working with the SRC to try and make the student House system the best it can be!

Even through various lockdowns, the close-knit house committee kept working together to create events and systems for the school - including assisting in the running of the annual sports carnivals, Ride2School days, and creating the framework for a house points system we hope to fully integrate next year. The House Committee is also in the process of creating a video explaining the House system to new and prospective students.

I would like to thank all the members of the House Committee for their amazing work this year, including Paul, Ryan, Josh, Abbi, Oscar, and Oskar; I thoroughly enjoyed working with you all.

The House Committee has spent the year consulting with students and designing mascot logos for each house. You can read all about this later in this edition.

We give a big shout out to the House Logo Design Committee: Paul, Mary, Juanita, Sunny, Abbi, Steph, Oscar, and Erica - they did really amazing work. We are sure the school will love the designs as much as we do! Thank you so much for all your incredible ideas and designs that helped bring the logos to life, and for all the time you invested in the project.

Twilight Market Committee

Sienna Seychell

Year 11

2022 Events Leader

The Twilight Market committee, although unsuccessful due to lockdown, worked tirelessly and collaborated our efforts to get store holders, food trucks and many fun activities arranged for the event. I feel very privileged to have worked with everyone on the committee: we were all dedicated to creating an amazing night for all. These plans and many months of hard work are not going to waste, with plans to follow a similar outline and stage an extraordinary Twilight Market next year!

Year 9

SRC Year Level Representative

I would have never imagined that BSC would have fortnightly student-led newsletters - yet here we are!

This year, I was delighted to lead the SRC Newsletter Committee and work with the SRC to engage, inform, and entertain the Brunswick student community. The SRC Newsletter Committee features determined and hard-working students. I was thrilled to be working with my committee to deliver 5 exciting and entertaining issues of The Brunswick Chronicle.

Despite ongoing lockdowns, weekly online meetings, and many long nights, our committee were always up for the challenge and I couldn’t have asked for a better team to work with. I am so proud of all the work the team has done this year and the ongoing resilience all the members have shown. The SRC Newsletter Committee is currently in the stages of writing our 6th and final issue for the year and we have some new ideas to incorporate in future issues which we are really excited to share with BSC and hopefully beyond Brunswick.

I would like to thank all the members of the SRC Newsletter Committee. Without them, The Brunswick Chronicle wouldn’t have been possible! Vy, Paul, Abbi, Emily, Ryan, Sanjana, Gabriel, Liam, and Charlotte. It has brought me great joy working with you and I hope BSC enjoys our issues just as much as we enjoy delivering them to the Brunswick community!

Year 11

2022 Events Leader

This year, despite the challenges of COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, the Events Committee nevertheless persisted in achieving events which contributed to the vibrant fabric of our school community. We were able to enjoy the success of Harmony Day, contribute to initiatives (such as public SRC meetings and Science Week Debates) organise inter-SRC leadership events, and orchestrate and execute Term 4 Casual Clothes Day. We look forward to further contributing to the events at BSC in 2022 in a hopefully uninterrupted year!

STEM X Sustainability Committee

Paul Ting

School Captain

This year, the Student Representative Council has renewed our passion for Sustainability. The STEM X Sustainability Committee was formed when we made structural changes to SRC. The Committee, under the leadership of Vy Vu and Xavier Cohen have been monumentally successful. They have taken a collaborative approach, understanding that conserving our planet is a collective responsibility, inspiring and empowering each member to play their part.

In the first half of the year, STEM X Sustainability began tackling plastic waste. This was marked by the celebration of Plastic Free July and the passionate advocacy around the disposal of soft plastics. The Committee then consulted with various organisations, establishing a school wide Soft-Plastics recycling scheme. When the SRC established our very first student newsletter, the Committee contributed tips on how to live more sustainably in every edition.

A central aim of the committee was to ensure to key information would be readily available to all students. They dedicated a large portion of their time around education, working with almost every other Committee at one point or another to integrate sustainability into their projects. They created slides around composting, recycling and waste minimisation which continue to be displayed on school TVs. Towards the latter end of the year, the Committee began production for a homegroup education session including a Sustainability video and quizzes.

The amazing work of this Committee and their collaboration with local groups such as the Australian Conservation Foundation Melbourne North by Northwest has been recognised in the community. We were nominated and subsequently won the Moreland Awards 2021 Category for Environmental Sustainability Achievement. This impressive feat will forever define Brunswick as an environmentally conscious school and we also received a grant from the Council for future sustainability projects. Visit Moreland Awards.

Congratulations to Vy, Xavier, Layla, Maya, Rose, Lucy, Sanjana and Gabriel for this amazing achievement. Your fervour has given Brunswick Secondary College a new Sustainable identity and you have set a new bar for the Student Representative Council!

Xavier Cohen,

Year 11

STEM X Sustainability Committee Leader

During 2021 I worked with Vy Vu and the other members of the STEM X Sustainability committee to improve our schools sustainability and engagement in STEM. Though the difficulty of remote learning the STEM X Sustainability committee continued to improve the school though programs such as the soft plastic recycling, Science Week Debate and the sustainability video. I would like to thank all the members of our committee for working so hard during a difficult year, along with the other committees and the sustainability club for working with us on our initiatives.

Vy Vu, STEM X Sustainability Committee Leader

Leading the STEM X Sustainability Committee was a wonderful experience – to see us making a difference to the school, to see our committee members’ passion and talents, and to see us grow in our leadership skills. I am very proud of all our achievements, and am grateful to Sustainability Club, the Student Agency Committee, the House Committee, and the Newsletter Committee, who have helped us so much with our sustainability initiatives.
