English

This term our staff have been working with English consultant Stephen Graham in the area of spelling. Stephen delivered a fantastic professional learning session on spelling for our teachers on our curriculum day on November 1st and we were fortunate to have him visit our classrooms last week to model some spelling lessons. The focus of his work is on teaching students about the four spelling knowledges: phonological, visual, morphemic and etymological. Students have had the opportunity to explore and practise these knowledges to develop efficient and flexible spelling strategies.

Our goal in this work is to improve consistency of teaching practices in spelling across the school to support the work we started in writing earlier in the year. Students will grow to understand the direct link between learning to spell and being an accomplished writer by becoming able to access a variety of spelling knowledges and strategies.
