THE ART COMPETITION EDITION
Our first art competition has been open for a week now and we have been absolutely floored by the quality of artworks submitted to date.
The theme for the Term 1 Art Competition is Portraiture.
Students have been asked to create and submit a portrait which is inspired by one of four artists; Jiab Prachakul, Chie Fueki, Pacita Abad and Huang Yan.
Each of these artists approach portraiture in slightly unconventional, deeply personal ways whilst challenging the limits of the artforms they work within.
Have a look at some of the fantastic submissions by our MCK students so far.
The Art Competition will be closing at the end of Term 1, with winners announced in early Term 2.
To enter, submit a photo of your artwork to artcomps@mckinnonsc.vic.edu.au.

YEAR 8 CERAMICS - A WORK IN PROGRESS
Learning about Japanese Popular Culture and the artist Hiroshi Yoshii, our Year 8 Ceramics students have been busy researching, planning, designing and creating their own ceramic character.
It has been a privilege to see their unique characters develop over the last 5 weeks. We still have a long way to go, but I can’t wait to see the final results! Hear what some of our students have to say about the progress of their exquisite characters.

“I am creating a character that looks like a wombat with leaves growing out of it. I started by creating a pinch pot for the head, then proceeded by adding spikes to the top of it to make it look like leaves. I then added two pinch pots together to make the body. In future lessons, I will be creating the legs and adding dips to the characters body and I’ll use a scorching tool to add texture.”

“In ceramics class we’ve been studying a Japanese artist called Hiroshi Yoshii, he makes funky looking digital characters. We’ve been taking our own twist on them and making them out of clay. I made mine by combining two pinch pots and adding all the facial features and a few more pinch pots on the stomach and top of the antenna/ears. To finish it off I’m going to use glaze to colour all of the pieces and then I’ll be done!”

Year 8K Student
“My character is based on two characters that I mixed. What makes it interesting is the hair strands that are leaves from a vegetable. I started by creating one pinch pot for the head and one for the body, to which I attached arms. I used my fingers, water and other tools to get that smooth texture. In future lessons, I will be creating the face, hair and legs, and joining the body and head together.”
