VET SPORT AND RECREATION

VET Sport and Recreation Units 1&2

The first year of VET Sport and Rec has been super fun and adventurous. We got to know one another really well through participating in many activities, excursions and camps, and working well together as a team.

At the start of the year we went on a day trip up to Queenscliff where we swam with seals.

In Term 2 our class ventured to Shoreham on a four-day bushwalking camp in which we had a blast going snorkelling, trekking and sitting around the fire. This camp really brought out the best in everyone. We also gained our Certificate 2 in first aid. This course taught us the knowledge necessary to be able to assist a patient in a first aid situation.

The surf lifesaving camp in November, where we attained our Surf Bronze medallions was outstanding.

VET Sport and Rec is a really beneficial subject which has taught us valuable life skills which we will be able to apply throughout our lives. We can’t wait for what’s to come next year!

VET Sport and Recreation Units 3 & 4

This year Sport and Rec students finished their last year together as a class. Over the two years the students got to partake in some incredible experiences that they will take with them forever. The course has not only taught the value in caring for and being a part of the great outdoors, but has also enhanced their comfort zones and leadership qualities, broadened their knowledge about the sport and recreation industry, and most importantly brought 17 students together to become their own little family.

This year the VET students were lucky enough to attend the Year 7 camp, where they acted as leaders for the year 7 groups. Each VET student worked incredibly hard to construct four lesson plans for their allocated group, who they stayed with for the entire camp. This was not only incredibly beneficial for the VET students as they were able to learn about instructing other students at different levels, but they were also able to be there for the younger students if they were feeling anxious, scared, or just wanted a chat.

As a part of the study on minimal impact, the students had a week long snowboarding camp to Mount Hotham. After a five-hour long trip to the mountain turned into a 13-hour long trip, tensions were high; but the kindness that was displayed by staff and students to the helpers ended up with the company giving us discounted pizza on the way back home; teaching us that even a smile in the worst of times can mean a lot more to some people than you might think. Our days consisted of Snowboarding lessons in the morning and free time in the afternoons where students were able to free ride whilst also taking note of the minimal impact practices around the mountain for reports.

Sea Kayaking camp was the last of the camps we would complete and was a congratulatory camp for all of our hard work and dedication to the subject. Over the four days we Kayaked 50km along the Glenelg River, crossing into South Australia on our last day. Spirits were high and it was an incredible final note to our last camp as a group.

Unimaginable experiences; I couldn't think of a better group to be with. Kew High offers a valuable subject for students, very helpful and caring teachers, experiences I would never have had without this opportunity. This is honestly the best subject. Emma Batty

Most rewarding learning experience of my life, we have all developed such lifelong skills that we can take with us once we have finished school Julia Halaseh-Russo and Tom Williams
