Australian Volleyball Schools Cup (AVSC)

This year over 110 Kew High students from 12 teams participated in the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup from Sunday 4 to Friday 9 December. Over 5000 students participated from 130 schools from all over Australia. Kew High School finished 13th overall, which is a massive achievement! A special mention to our Year 7 Girls team who won a Gold Medal and the Year 7 Boys team who came away with a Bronze medal, these are fantastic results with medals hard to come by. Our students have been training all year for this event and as a large squad, they all should be proud of their achievements. Bring on 2017!

New Zealand Cultural and Volleyball Tour

On November 17 the Year 9 Volleyball teams were at Melbourne Airport nice and early, pumped for an overseas trip to New Zealand. During the first five days we were challenged to step out of our comfort zones and to strengthen our already strong team bonds as we participated in a range of adventure activities including Luging, The Sky Screamer, Jet Boating, White Water Rafting (down a seven metre drop fall), the Giant Swing and a range of cultural activities. We were lucky enough to attend a Hangi Experience where we were immersed in the Maori culture, learning about their traditions, costumes, the Hakka, cultural games and the Hangi meal which is a traditional feast!

Then came the Volleyball tournament which was opened by a riveting performance by a New Zealand band called Shockwaves. The two teams then took part in a series of games that graded which division they would play. The boys came 10th out of 48 teams in Division 1 and the girls came 5th also out of 48 teams in Division 3.

Shout out to Marcus and Mr Abbott for being amazing coaches and making the trip so enjoyable, also thank you to Ms Bates and Bill who organised and came with us on this unforgettable journey. It’s been one of the greatest experiences of our lives.
