Thanks to Dana Twycross and Sam McMasters from the Dept of Education, Jesse from Pink and Blue and Shirley Burrell from Shine Bright for informing our students on the careers and pathways in childcare and kinder teaching event which was being held today. We had a fantastic take up from interested students across the college. Well done to these students for checking their messages and social media posts particularly the Year 9 cohort who really want to discover what is out there beyond school. It has been wonderful to see all these students be so proactive in careers and pathways in the last few weeks, great job – Mystie Bullock, Tegan Lenne, Lily Stewart, Taleka Kinnane Chilcott, Matilda Masters, Gabbey Beveridge, Maddi Riley, Aliyah Rankin, Lauren Dobbie, Ada Bridger King, Zach Smith and Isabel Shillinglaw.

JOB SUCCESSES:

Well done to Ada Bridger King on being a positive and productive student. A visit to Careers and Pathways to discuss things ended up being a chance to talk about casual employment and Ada becoming one of the newest team members at Twisted Science! Congrats Ada. Congratulations also to Georgia Tomlinson who through some excellent active job seeking has secured a full time administrative traineeship with John Deere/Hauesler in Echuca (I think Georgia had 3 interviews at one stage!) and Ned Tomlinson who will commence an apprenticeship next year with Moama Bakery.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

Great efforts by Brodie Hartford , Jett Lia, Kyle Peach, Finn Palmer, Joshua Surace, Mitch Hipwell and Gabbey Beveridge to organise their own work experience in the final weeks of school. Jett has completed his and has been offered a chance to complete an SBAT with Thomsons Electrical. Brett Thomson was the business person who interviewed Jett during the Real Futures/Beacon Mock Interviews and was very impressed with him. Jett followed up with Brett and produced a terrific outcome from a relationship built during his year.

Also, a reminder that 2022 VCAL intermediate and senior students should start to think about and organise their work placement arrangements for at least first term next year during these summer holidays – remember, intermediates, you are looking for 1 day a week, and senior students, 2 days a week.

The total number of work experience days for a student must not exceed:

  • 40 days in a school year
  • 10 days during any school term

A Principal can allow a student to undertake work experience for up to 15 days per term, but the total number of days must not exceed 40 days per year.

The total number of structured workplace learning days for a student must not exceed:

  • 40 days during each school year
  • 10 days during each school term

The total number of structured workplace learning days a student may undertake with an employer must not exceed 20 days during any school year.

Things you can do to start organising your work placement:

  • Check out the CCLLEN career videos on the EC careers and pathways pages – local employers talking about work experience: https://careers.echucacollege.vic.edu.au/custom-page/1
  • Let friends and family know that you want to do some work experience (they have the best contacts!)
  • Approach/speak to local employers and ask whether they would be interested in taking you (employers really like it when young people use their initiative and confidence themselves)
  • Speak with Lorelle in careers and pathways or contact CCLLEN and use the SWL schools portal: https://www.ccllen.com.au/

INDIGENOUS PATHWAY OPPORTUNITIES:

Congratulations and good luck to Anton Atkinson Combe and Alliyah Cooper for applying for the Department of Education’s Marrung Scholarships ($5000 over 2 years), encouraging them to complete Year 11 and 12. We will find out if they are successful in the coming weeks.

Please do not hesitate to contact me through Xuno or via my email lorelle.pearse@education.vic.gov.au to assist you to support your EC student with their career and pathways aspirations. Everyone can be successful!

SPECIAL MENTIONS:

Congratulations to Ella Birtles (Year 10) on her recent selection into the University of Melbourne Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program - Class of 2023. The committee were very impressed by Ella’s academic achievement and commend her on her community involvement and also her career aspirations. Ella was chosen from 1500 applications, so she should be very proud of this accomplishment. As a Kwong Lee Dow (KLD) Young Scholar, Ella will be joining a supportive university community and getting to know other Young Scholars through a tailored program of events and activities over the next two years.

MY CAREER INSIGHTS/YEAR 9 MORRISBY COMPLETION REPORT:

This year 118 of our 150 Year 9 students completed their Morrisby profiles and were interviewed regarding their results that they received in hard copy. The report from DET showed that our Year 9’s at Echuca College had ‘ambitious and creative’ work styles; enjoyed very much an ‘active’ work environment; felt that their learning styles were predominantly ‘practical’; that their interests showed a preference for working in ‘caring for people’ and also ‘work that involved giving advice’. Specialist interest areas showed large numbers in sport and art areas.

Please remember that Morrisby is now accessible to you for life. Looking forward to ALL of next year’s Year 9’s completing their profiles in Real Futures classes.
