Preps Learning from Home

Term 3 Week 7

In reading this week, students have continued to use their reading super powers and strategies to solve unknown words. They have been sounding out and stretching the word, saying each sound slowly, going back and reading the word again and rereading it smoothly. We have been learning new digraphs that make particular sounds such as ‘sh’ and ‘ch’ and practising the reading strategies of visualising and retelling stories. We are applying what we have already learned in our reading lessons this term to retell a favourite fairy story in sequence.

We continue our journal writing each Monday with students writing about a time they felt proud. Students started to write a new narrative story this week, firstly planning their story, then writing a draft using the planner they created to help them include detail in their writing. We also continued to practise our handwriting skills and learning the clockwise letters h, p and k.

In numeracy we looked at how we can solve subtraction problems using materials to make a model and drawing a diagram to record our thinking. We used a number line to solve subtraction problems and discovered two ways we can think about a subtraction problem: as take away or finding the difference. We used informal units to measure length and in Coding we created an algorithm for a Beebot to follow.

The prep students continue to learn about keeping healthy and this week we looked at external body parts, labelling them and writing actions for a family member to do using different body parts. We also enjoyed a whole prep exercise class using lots of body parts in our exercises.

Thank you to our wonderful prep families who are doing a fabulous job encouraging and supporting prep students in their learning at home. We are so impressed with the effort applied and the quality of assignments posted. Well done everyone.

Have a great week of learning.
