Primary Years Program at GGLPS

GGLPS teaches the Australian curriculum using the Primary Years Program (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate as a framework to impart this. There are many different aspects to the Teaching and Learning program of the school and these are some of the rich learning experiences in which the students are involved.

The Year 6 students began their exhibition unit this week.

The PYP provides the following summary of the exhibition as:

the culminating, collaborative experience in the final year of the PYP.
an authentic process for students to explore, document and share their understanding of an issue or opportunity of personal significance.
student-initiated, designed and collaborative.

This week, the students are revisiting their knowledge of the learner profile along with the elements of the PYP which are: the approaches to learning (skills), concepts, knowledge and action. The students will use these elements as they prepare to be introduced to their area of inquiry.

The students are working within a different transdisciplinary theme this year as they look at ‘How we express ourselves’. This is defined as; an inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.

As students work together, they will also engage with the school community in a variety of ways. Students will work with mentors who will provide them with extra support and encouragement. There will also be opportunities for students to talk to and question experts in their areas of inquiry. There will be more information shared about this soon as we seek to find experts within our community.

Many of the students expressed their excitement and nervousness as they begin the process of exhibition. We look forward to seeing the students progress and growth leading up to their presentation of exhibition next term.
