Update on VET

2020 has been a difficult year for our VET (Vocational Education and Training) classes with their focus on practical ‘hands on’ learning. Where possible VET classes have moved online and students are working through theoretical components of their courses. Where the competencies have a practical outcome, these have to be postponed until face to face classes are able to resume.

In the meantime, students going into Years 10 – 12 have been making their applications for VET in 2021. At Northcote High School we have two streams of VET students. These include the internal VET students enrolled in learning Applied Languages - Chinese and the external stream.

VET Applied Languages have a focus on learning for the workplace (examples include tourism and hospitality). The external stream includes all those students who travel off campus to study their VET subject on either a Wednesday or Thursday afternoon.

In 2021 we have students in Year 10 (25), Year 11 (54) and Year 10 (26) applying to do a wide range of VET subjects:

  • Carpentry (19 students)
  • Electro-technology (7 students)
  • Engineering (5 students)
  • Kitchen Operations (9 students)
  • Visual Arts (4 students)
  • Music Sound Production (2 students)
  • Music Performance (5 students)
  • Sport and Recreation (6 students)
  • Make-up (4 students)
  • Applied Fashion (9 students)
  • Animal Studies (3 studies)
  • Equine studies (2 students)
  • Horticulture (3 students)
  • Screen and media (6 students)

Travelling off site allows the students the opportunity to take on the responsibility that comes with more independence. All of these subjects contribute to the VCE and VCAL certificates.

Subjects that have scored assessment have a VCE VET exam and will contribute to the ATAR score like any other VCE subject. VET subjects that do not have scored assessment may provide an increment of 10% of the fourth subject to the ATAR score. VET is a compulsory part of the VCAL program.

We have 105 applications to do a VET subject in Year 10 – 12 next year. Sixty-five of these applications are to Northern College of Arts and Technology (NCAT), Murray Road Preston. NCAT are hosting a series of online information sessions in the coming week that are the next step in the application for VET in schools process.

Registration by students and their families is essential. See the flyer below for more information.
