Exploring tertiary opportunities virtually

Is that the end of another term I see coming at me?? It’s hard to believe that August is already behind us, despite the fact that each day generally feels absurdly long!  August is ‘Open Day Season’ for most tertiary institutions, and of course this year it has been a whole new approach.  It’s been great to talk to so many students who have registered for Open Day(s) and attended virtual tours, information sessions, visited ‘Swintopia’, or participated in online events.  Open Days are continuing, and mostly you need to register to attend. So if you haven’t already done so, you should explore tertiary options by joining a virtual open day event.

I am privileged to represent schools in Moreland-Darebin on the Inner North Youth Employment Taskforce (INYET). The committee are working extremely hard in the background to assist young people in our region to manage the impacts of COVID, and to minimise the impact this has on future employment prospects. I have invited several students from Years 11 and 12 to contribute to the ‘voice’ of young people who will help us formulate our plans over the coming five years.  It’s so important we build effective and functional partnerships to better the career outcomes for young people.  Rest assured that there are many people working together to develop solutions which will help us through all the challenges being brought about by the current pandemic.

Year 12 students need to complete VTAC!

Year 12 students and families are reminded that we would like all VTAC applications for study in 2021 to be completed before the end of term three.  Currently about 20% of Year 12 students have registered and applied for tertiary courses, either at University or TAFE.

Considering the current economic climate, we strongly advocate for all year 12 students to apply for further study next year.  With the employment market under immense pressure, and travel being an unlikely option, it’s a good time to get started on a course of study which will open up more connections and opportunities for your future career.

Students will still be able to modify their preferences (for most courses) up until January 4th 2021. At this stage students should list in their preference any courses with early closing dates, and courses they are interested in for next year.

Students who do not plan to apply for courses via VTAC for 2021 need to communicate with their tutor as to what their plans are.

If you need to discuss how to apply, courses, or other plans for next year you can make an appointment for a chat via the Careers page on MYNHS.  By working proactively together we will be able to support students to make a smooth and meaningful transition from NHS.

Attention all students applying for Fine Arts with University of Melbourne

There have been some significant changes to the process and dates for students to submit supplementary information ONLINE – including performance auditions/portfolios etc. – as part of their application for Fine Arts degrees.

Due to COVID impacts, many courses will require students to upload video recordings of performances, sound recordings, portfolios etc.

Importantly, the closing date to apply AND submit all supplementary requirements is Wednesday 30 September.

Students should list these courses as early as possible in their VTAC preferences. Once you have done this you will receive emails outlining the additional requirements.

Students who intend to apply for these courses are advised to carefully check the University of Melbourne website to ensure that they understand what they need to do, and by when.  Search for Fine Arts  and choose the specific Fine Arts course you wish to apply for.  Click on ‘how to apply’, and then ‘auditions and interviews’.

Students can also register to attend the University of Melbourne Virtual Open Days to ask questions and find out more.

Rearch Further with RMIT

RMIT have created a range of resources that have been uploaded to their Reach Further website!  This is designed for Year 12 students wishing to go on to TAFE or university study.  RMIT have recorded a series of videos with current RMIT students, who discuss how and why they applied for SEAS and RMIT scholarships, and what they did to ensure their application was strong. They will also be running a series of digital events for Year 12 students and their families about applying for SEAS, RMIT's SNAP Access Scheme, and RMIT Scholarships.
