A treat for morning tea by Yianna

Food For Thought

Our year 8 students have been considering the factors that impact food security and food sustainability. One of the activities students completed was to demonstrate how statistics can be used to inform and influence eating behaviours and food choice. Students developed a simple Infographic that could be used to explain the impact of food waste. Students used their IT skills to develop some informative work that could be proudly displayed.

On the same theme the suggested practical activity for Year 8 was to make a treat for the family using what was in the pantry, no food waste, with a focus on using seasonal ingredients if possible. The suggestion was for apple and rhubarb muffins but we were pleased to see students branching out with their creations.

At the start of remote learning student were invited to grow some herbs and veggies as an extension activity. I planted parsley, rocket and spinach. A cheeky possum ate my parsley so I have now netted, the spinach is moving along nicely with bits and pieces picked for a salad and my rocket is found on the pizza I made with my Year 10 students. I do hope my Year 8 students are also having success and fun in the garden.

Café Culture

As our Year 10 class continue with exploring the properties of food, this week we investigated gelatinisation and absorption by making a risotto. The students had a basic recipe and put their own spin on the finished product.
