Digital Photography and the Storyteller

Northcote Noir

As part of the Year 9/10 Northcote Model course, Digital Photography and the Story Teller, students have garnered influence from the work of Cindy Sherman. Cindy Sherman is an American Artist/Photographer who rose to fame in the art world with her series ‘Untitled Film Stills’. These black-and-white photographs feature the artist herself as a model in various costumes and poses, and are her portrayals of female stereotypes found in film, television, and advertising. Similar to Barbara Kruger, another great American Artist, Sherman examines and distorts femininity as a social construct.

The students have appropriated Sherman’s use of a narrative, the use of photographic conventions like frames within frames to create a sense of a stage and have then used the work of Alfred Hitchcock to help reinforce the drama.
