Year 7 - 8

Year 7 Camp

Recently, the Year 7 students participated in a three-day camp exploring the activities and experiences of the high-country at the YMCA’s Howman’s Gap camp near Falls Creek. This camp is an annual key element of the Year 7 program, allowing the group to better get to know each other, whilst continuing to work on their group dynamics, communication and development as a cohort.

The cohort were split into five activity groups and rotated through a range of outdoor activities, from archery to the high ropes and giant swing, climbing wall, canoeing and initiative activities. But it’s not all fun and games – there’s some valuable personal learning and development that occurs too! We battled with the four seasons on all three days – from sunny days to cold, rain, thunder and lightning. There was never a dull moment and the weather never dulled the students enthusiasm of being away together and having fun.

The camp finished up with some team-building games and a mini-olympics, which allowed the group to celebrate their team achievements and work collaboratively to solve a range of tasks and scavenger hunt activities.

Our Year 7 students were impressive ambassadors for the College and demonstrated how far they have come this term in developing into thoughtful, considerate, empathetic and motivated young people.

A huge thank you to the team who facilitated the groups; Mr Jones, Ms Brown, Mr Goldsworthy, Wendy Marshall and Ms Parker. An extra special thank you to our College Council President, Warwick Higgins, who took leave from his work to attend the camp and provided excellent assistance with the group (and demonstrated exemplary coffee-making skills for the staff!)

We look forward to doing it all again next year!

Alumni shares his journey

Year 7's hosted a special visitor in recent weeks, a former student who is now a police officer. The Year 7's prepared a series of questions about life at school, university and in the police force.

When people talk to the police it generally takes place when the Police suspect your involvement in the commission of a crime or when you are a victim or witness to an alleged crime.  So it was very interesting to hear from a different side, the Police. The past student talked about how he went to University and studied the bachelor of criminology. He was telling us that eventually he would love to become a detective but he has to go through four or five years in the police force. It was interesting to hear the process of training and that he has been through the testing of his gun and successfully passed. Once trained in the force you are expected to be confident in arresting people and locking them up. After listening to the past student yesterday, I admire police officers for the hard work they do, it is not an easy job. His presentation has encouraged me to follow my dreams of becoming a detective one day.

Last week we had a visit from a past student- he became a police officer. We got to ask him some questions. My question was when did you get your equipment like your gun, pepper spray, batten, hand cuffs etc. I also asked when did he start his training and get his uniform. He explained that he did the training for 34 weeks. I thought this was a really long time but every week there was different exercises like in week 9 he completed fire arm training. He said that he has already had to make some arrests for people under the influence of drugs or alcohol in Melbourne. I liked how the past student said that he knew he wanted to be a police officer from back when he was my age. I was already thinking of joining the police force or being a fire person  or something like that.  I was really interested in the info I got from him, I thought the class was lucky that we got to ask any questions we like. I am grateful that he came to visit and that we got to hold his badge.
