Road Safety at NMPS

Limited parking at NMPS

We strongly encourage families to walk, ride, scoot or get public transport to school. The council provide 2 pick-up/drop off areas, we call them kiss and drop zones, one on Murphy street and one on Harcourt street. These zones are in place to ensure student safety.

We take the safety of our students and families very seriously. There have been several accidents and ‘near misses’ in our surrounding streets, including a terrible accident recently resulting in a member of the public and their child being taken to hospital in an ambulance as a result of a car accident on the school boundary. As a school we have put articles in our newsletter, on our online platform Compass, had education programs at the school for students to learn car and street safety and have had staff out at these areas speaking to families about parking.

Unfortunately, these attempts to educate our community on parking safely and legally has not improved behaviours to prevent accidents. We understand that getting students to school can be difficult, however regardless of what time students arrive at school, parking signs must be obeyed.

We have been in consultation with the local council and local police on other ways we can get the message across to our school community. One of these ways is to issue parking tickets to those who park illegally. However, we hope that if everyone follows the road rules and parking signs appropriately, families will be able to get their children to and from school in a safe and orderly manner.

The first two issue of our school newsletter for 2019 dedicated detailed images and instructions about traffic safety at NMPS. These can be accessed via our school website here: Errol Street News #1 and Errol Street News #2.

This signage is in force on both Murphy and Harcourt Streets. These are the streets that run alongside the west and east sides of the school and where our school gates are located.

As you can see that restrictions change in relationship to the peak times for our school, in the morning from 7.30-9.30am and at the end of class time from 3-4pm.

Be aware that City of Melbourne traffic officers sweep through these streets.

Our school encourages following of this and the Kiss & Go procedure to ensure our community stays safe and that pedestrian and cars flow well.
