Premier’s VCE Awards

The Premier’s VCE Awards recognises students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in the Victorian Certificate of Education.

On 3 June 2019, in front of more than 1000 guests, 290 award recipients were presented with Premier's VCE Awards for their exceptional study outcomes in 2018.

Awards were presented in three categories: 21 Top All-Round VCE High Achievers; three Top International Students; and 293 Study Award recipients across 87 VCE subjects.

Congratulations to Theano – Christina Salta who achieved an ATAR of 50 in Greek and received an award.

Theano enjoyed the awards ceremony, which was well deserved after all her effort and hard work to achieve this score.

Well done Theano – all of us at South Oakleigh are immensely proud of you!

Learning Japanese in SMALLab

South Oakleigh is fortunate to have a new facility, SMALLab, a room-sized interactive environment where students are out of their seats and moving as they learn. Research demonstrates that SMALLab increases student motivation, drives student-led learning and improves teacher performance. Both students and teachers love the experience.

In Year 9 Japanese students created their own games using Japanese vocabulary and the SMALLab software. Each student came up with unique matching pairs for their games. When all the games were created it was time to test drive them at the lab!

In the lab room the game was displayed on the floor and students interacted using a 3D-wand. Students created matching games with each player needing to match vocabulary—Japanese to English, or Japanese to a photo image. It took a little while for students to get used to the system but in no time  they were manoeuvring the icons and characters of the game.

SMALLab is enjoyable, keeping students busy with a lot of physical activity whilst increasing student engagement.
