Year 7 Wetlands Excursion

On 28 and 29 May year 7 humanities students visited the Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands Education Centre. Students were tasked to undertake firsthand research on our local wetlands and waterways by visiting the sustainable education centre. At the centre students learnt about the urban water cycle and the importance of preserving drinkable water. We also gained an insight into how the wetlands function and its influence on the environment and local wildlife.

There were many valuable learning resources on this trip, including the stormwater interactive model that demonstrated how stormwater travels into our rivers, bays and creeks.

Students also explored the local wetlands by walking to various viewing platforms and taking pictures for their project.

This geographical excursion gave students a unique perspective on our water and the urban water cycle, and an interesting time was had by all.

Year 12 Yakult Excursion

Yakult is a sweetened probiotic milk beverage fermented with the probiotic bacteria strain ‘Lactobacillus casei shirota.’ It was first discovered by Japanese scientist Dr Minoru Shirota in the 1930s. Originally based in Tokyo Japan, Yakult is now consumed by 39 million people in over 35 countries!

Unit 3 Business Management students had the opportunity to tour the Yakult modern manufacturing facility in Dandenong South and learn about the origins of the drink and manufacturing processes. This enabled us to put our learning into perspective by seeing first-hand the operation systems that are in place at Yakult to produce the probiotic drink. Staff at Yakult took us through each stage of the manufacturing process—from their inputs such as skim milk powder, water and their bottles to transformation processes such as dissolving, sterilisation and fermentation.

They also shared their strict quality control measures, explaining why this was important and described how they’re going ‘above and beyond’ in terms of their corporate social responsibility (including hosting factory tours).

As part of the tour they gave us samples of both Yakult and Yakult Light, enabling many students to drink Yakult for the first time!
