Extra Curricular Program

Mosaics class

As part of the South Oakleigh extra-curricular program, art enhancement classes provide students the opportunity to learn about glass and its varied uses.

Students have developed a series of creative concepts, including completing a set of Aboriginal designs. These designs will be used as the tops of pine picnic tables constructed by students of Holmesglen TAFE.

The focus has been on organic and geometrical shapes considering scale, colour, contrast and concentric circles.

Everyone is welcome to join the mosaics class!

Japanese Calligraphy Club

Have you ever seen calligraphy art? You might have seen it at an art gallery or perhaps printed on a T-shirt.

Wherever it may be, South Oakleigh College now has a Calligraphy Club that offers students the opportunity to learn Japanese calligraphy.

What is the difference between Western calligraphy and Japanese calligraphy? Western calligraphy uses ink-pen whereas Japanese calligraphy utilises a fine-point brush and Indian ink.  The brush is thick, and the width of writing controlled by how much pressure is applied to the brush—as with fountain pens.

Students need to concentrate to ensure they have the right stroke order and brush movements. There’s no turning back once you have moved the brush! Students use authentic brush and ink on special rice paper, which has a different feel to the paper we normally use.

Calligraphy Club is held every Friday lunchtime.
