Foundation (Prep)

Happy Friday everyone!

As I mentioned last week, each morning we start the day with phonics practise. The children are learning the sounds for each letter so that we can begin blending sounds. This will then lead to reading and writing words. Students who already have a solid understanding of the letter sounds are being extended to spell small words.

The sounds we have covered so far are:

'Ants on apples, a, a, a'

'Cats drive cars, c, c, c'

'Ducks dive down, d, d, d'

'On the orange, o, o, o'

'Girls giggle, g, g, g'

'Seals swim, seals slide, s, s, s'

'Quick, quiet, queen, kw, kw, kw'

'Five fat fish, f, f, f'

'In the igloo, i, i, i'

'Lizards like lollipops, l, l, l'

'Trotting tigers, t, t, t'

The children practise writing daily. This may be in the form of a handwriting lesson, Writer's Workshop (free choice writing) or a written response to a book. This week we shared a book called Mr Brown's Magnificent Apple Tree by Yvonne Winer. The children were encouraged to talk about the book and retell an event from the text.

In Maths, we practised drawing shapes and created fun shape monsters/creatures.

We have also discussed the 3 important rules to remember when measuring length.

  1. Start at the edge
  2. No gaps
  3. Same size (In Prep we use informal units to measure with which must be of the same size. E.g. icy pole sticks, unifix cubes or blocks of the same size)

We had a go at measuring small items in our classroom with unifix cubes and then used icy pole sticks to measure each other.

Have a wonderful weekend!
