Torrens Semester 2

Welcome back!

Welcome to semester 2!

As you may have noticed, T16/T17 as well as T18/19 have opened up the dividers to form combined learning spaces.  All our teachers are highly collaborative, planning and consulting online together in order to meet the needs of our students.

This move aligns with our school Future Focussed Education goals of developing learning environments where students feel safe and valued. It will also best prepare our students for the open, collaborative and flexible learning spaces in Fisher.

Sharing of Learning

We often receive the question, ‘how can I see what my child is learning at school?’ A great question! Our Torrens students have created their own Learning Sites. Rather than publishing only final assessment pieces, student Sites are an ongoing journey of their progress - both of their learning and approaches to learning.

Ask your child to share their Site with you. We encourage you to discuss the learning experiences with your child and ask them what the learning intention for the task was and how they showed evidence of this. Many tasks also include feedback from teachers, peers and the student themselves.

At the end of each term, we will be inviting all parents to the Torrens building for an exhibition as students showcase their learning. This will include the sharing of evidence and a certificate presentation for Gaining Your Wings.

Gaining Your Wings

This semester, our Torrens students will be exploring a new and exciting initiative called Gaining Your Wings. This programme gives year 3/4 students the opportunity to showcase knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that will prepare them for success in the 21st century. Each area is based around the Australian Curriculum General Capabilities.

Through Gaining Your Wings, students will be:

Learning about...

knowledge, skills, behaviours and approaches to learning that prepare you for success in the 21st century

Learning to...

document evidence of your learning and approaches to learning

manage your time

show organisation

take risks and challenge yourself

Learning to be...

independent, organised, reflective, thriving learners

General capabilities within the Australian Curriculum make up a set of knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that can be developed through all the learning areas.

The general capabilities play a significant role in the Australian Curriculum in equipping young Australians to live and work successfully in the twenty-first century.

In the Australian Curriculum, capability encompasses knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions. Students develop capability when they apply knowledge and skills confidently, effectively and appropriately in complex and changing circumstances, in their learning at school and in their lives outside school. They also offer opportunities to add depth and richness to student learning.

For further information, visit the General Capabilities pages on the Australian Curriculum website.

Torrens students will be introduced to each aspect of Gaining Your Wings, giving time to discuss the vocabulary and support students with their preparation and documentation.

Class time will be dedicated each week for students to work on tasks and gather and document evidence. There will be some tasks and documentation that will form part of our Home Learning special project. Over the next few weeks, students will be sharing different areas of Gaining Their Wings with parents.

Further information about our Gaining Your Wings programme and end of term exhibition will be shared through the LNPS newsletter and the LNPS Facebook page.
