Level 3/4

It’s been a really busy couple of weeks in Level 3 and 4!

It has been a very exciting lead up to camp in Year 4 and we look forward to sharing our adventures with you in the next newsletter. In the meantime, we have been busy working on lots of different things in the classroom over the past few weeks.

In Mathematics, Level 3 students have been learning about different types of graphs and ways to represent data. They have also explored rounding and extended their knowledge of place value. Level 4 students have been improving their mapping skills and have used the Camp Weekaway map to learn how to locate places based on grid references.

In Reading workshop sessions, Level 3 students have been practising summarising. This has included a wide selection of texts ranging from Dreaming stories to information reports and other non-fiction texts. Level 4 students have also improved their summarising skills by studying fairy tales and texts about the Commonwealth Games.

Writing sessions in Level 3 have been focussed on creating information reports and fact files. Students have practised researching various topics, and displayed the information in the form of a poster. These posters have included many features of non-fiction texts such as: titles, sub headings and captions. Level 4 students have continued their work on informative writing and have created texts about their classmates, favourite animals and the Commonwealth Games. They have also enjoyed publishing some of their free choice writing, further displaying their understanding of the writing process.

The Inquiry topic for this term is Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, language and history. Both year levels are learning about the history and customs of Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation, and Level 4 students have begun researching their topics for their projects. Students are working well in partners, and are looking forward to presenting their work to the class at the end of the term. Year 3 students enjoyed an excursion to CERES Community Environment Park which allowed them to experience Wurundjeri culture up close.

It’s been just as busy outside the classroom, with students from levels 3 and 4 participating in Hoop Time. It was fantastic to see students take to the basketball court and represent our school so well. It was especially encouraging to see all the support from classmates and parents whenever a Rangeview team played. The day was a complete success and a big congratulations goes to Mr Clark’s team for winning the grand final and progressing to the next round!

Level 3 students visited the CERES Community Environment Park and had a fantastic time learning about Wurundjeri culture and practices. The day consisted of three engaging and fun sessions, where students were able to explore different aspects of Wurundjeri culture. One session involved learning about Aboriginal artwork, with a particular focus on what the various symbols mean and the story that is told. Check out some of the photos below where students were encouraged to use ochre to paint these symbols on their body! Another session involved walking around the gardens of CERES and learning about the various types of plants that Wurundjeri people have used for thousands of years. These plants are used for many purposes including: to treat injury, for food, and even as a water source! The third session involved a dramatic re-enactment of the Dreaming story of ‘Tiddalik the Frog’ from the Kurnai people. All students participated in the story, which involved cockatoos, kangaroos, eels and possums and reinforced the overarching message of the day; only take what you need, not as much as you want. The Level 3 team would like to extend a big thank you to all the parent helpers that came along and made the day run so smoothly!

‘Cupcake Day’ was a great success due to all the parents and helpers who made beautiful and delicious cupcakes. The students loved the amazing range of cupcakes to choose from, and the staff truly appreciate the support from our wider school community.

Level 3 and 4 students are currently battling it out for the ‘Golden Shoe’ award! The initiative is called ‘Walk and Wheels Once a Week’ and is encouraging all students to walk (for more than 7 minutes) to school every Wednesday. Students are also able to tally the days they walk to school other than Wednesday, and count them towards their class’ total. There are good prizes up for grabs, so keep walking!
