Level 1
100 Days of Year 1! We had so much fun celebrating our 100 Days which included craft activities, 100 exercises, 100 themed Show and Tell, Mathematics activities, and of course, FISH AND CHIPS for lunch! The children looked fabulous in their crowns and were very excited to reach this milestone. Another special thank you goes out to the wonderful parent helpers who picked up and delivered our lunch!
During our Reading Workshops we have been learning how to identify the difference between the main idea of a story, and the supporting details. We also developed our summarising skills by using a Retell Rope to help us retell the sequence of events of a fictional story. The children made summarising chatterboxes and used these to practise their summarising skills with a partner.
This term we have been building the foundational skills required to write an Information Report. The children worked so hard to collect facts about a variety of animals and carefully sorted these facts into categories. The children worked with a partner to write their first Information Report about the Giant Pacific Octopus! The following week, the children used their research skills to collect and sort information about a dinosaur and wrote incredibly interesting Information Reports which they proudly shared with their classmates.
We have been developing our data collection and graphing skills in Mathematics. After taking a class survey about our favourite dinosaurs, we collected the data using tally marks. We then made pictographs to illustrate the results and answered a variety of questions about our graph.
Last week was all about fractions and the children enjoyed using a variety of materials to help consolidate their understanding of the topic. There was a lot of talk about how we must cut pieces of cake and pizza into equal parts to ensure fairness! We designed our own pizzas and decided how much of each topping (as a fraction) that we wanted to put on it!
We are certainly feeling like paleontologists and scientists in Level 1 as we further explore dinosaurs, researching their features, habitats and diets. We have enjoyed comparing and contrasting different reptiles, drawing dinosaurs, examining living ferns and fossil ferns and creating our own playdoh dinosaurs. The children have enjoyed building their knowledge of dinosaur features and how these features helped them to move, eat and survive.
Some of the Level 1 classes have been looking after the Rangeview chickens over the last month. The children enjoy spending time with the chickens at recess and lunch, and making sure they have enough food and water.
What a sweet ending to the Level 1 news – CUPCAKE DAY! Thank you to everyone who delivered cupcakes to school for this exciting (and delicious) day! The Level 1 children enjoyed it VERY much!
