SWINBURNE - New Majors in the Bachelor of Arts

Our arts, humanities and social science courses are designed for action.  Meaning, you’ll not only build your understanding of contemporary society, but also your confidence and distinct skill set to make the difference you want to see.  As mentioned in an earlier newsletter, Swinburne is reimagining it Arts degree, and offering a range of innovative majors.  These include – 

 

  • Climate and Social Justice - the study of climate and social justice is multi-disciplinary and includes sociology, philosophy, history, Indigenous studies, and politics.  In this major, students get to expand their knowledge of key concepts in conflict resolution, environmental justice, and social justice, and be ready to make their mark on a greener, more equitable future.

     
  • Perspectives on Globalisation - the study of perspectives on globalisation is multi-disciplinary and includes sociology, politics, history, and Indigenous studies.  In this major, students get to delve into the social, cultural, and political routes that have unfolded in the digital age.  Students will get to develop essential cultural competency skills and think critically about how the creative possibilities generated by globalisation can be fostered while the threats it poses are mitigated.

     
  • Ethics and Technology - the study of ethics and technology is multi-disciplinary and includes philosophy, sociology, and politics.  In this major, students will examine the many ethical issues around privacy and surveillance, human rights, and equity.  Students will also develop strong verbal and written communication skills to create policy needed to protect human rights, social equity, and security now and in the future. 

     
  • Politics, Power, and Technology - the study of politics, power and technology is multi-disciplinary and includes politics, philosophy, and history.  Students will develop a deep understanding of key political concepts such as power, democracy, and security in this major.  They will probe and question political structures and how new media technology has created fresh opportunities for democratic mobilisation and participation at local, national, and global levels, while opening up new ways to corrupt democratic processes.  Students will also analyse how the use and misuse of technology influences security, privacy, freedom and human rights in traditional political processes and institutions.

     
  • Screen Studies and Popular Culture - from smart phones, to streaming services and VR, in this innovative major students will develop a sound understanding of the ways entertainment and screen technology interact. Students will chart the history of screen technologies and use their creativity and initiative to anticipate what the future of entertainment will be.  Students will also create next generation entertainment projects in real world industry collaborations with screen industry experts.

     
  • Professional and Creative Writing – with an emphasis on new forms of publishing, this major will aid students in learning how to harness the power of words to tell compelling stories to inform and inspire the world.  Students will learn to understand the traditional and latest practice-led methods to hone your writing practise.

They will also explore how the online world has given power and voice to stories of diversity.
