Wellbeing at DSC

SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER

A timely reminder in these chilly winter months to be on the lookout for signs and symptoms of seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, and to take early steps to protect yourself and your families from this particular type of depression.

Signs and Symptoms to look out for include:

  • Feeling depressed most of the day, nearly every day
  • Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
  • Experiencing changes in appetite or weight, especially overeating and craving carbohydrates
  • Having problems with sleep, especially oversleeping (hypersomnia)
  • Feeling sluggish or agitated, with low energy
  • Feeling hopeless or worthless
  • Having difficulty concentrating
  • Social withdrawal (feeling like “hibernating”)

There are actions you can take early, to help prevent or reduce the effects of SAD:

  1. Getting enough sleep (8 to 10 hours is recommended for young people aged 13-18)
  2. Eating a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and protein
  3. Spend time outside every day, even if it’s cloudy. Daylight can help you feel better.
  4. Try to get 30 minutes of exercise at least three times a week. Exercise relieves stress and anxiety, which can play a role in your SAD symptoms.
  5. Stay involved with your social circle and regular activities. They can provide support during the winter months.
  6. Consider seeing a mental health professional who’s trained in CBT. This treatment can be very effective for seasonal affective disorder.
  7. Consider medications: Talk to your healthcare provider about taking an antidepressant. Medications can help if your symptoms are severe or if they continue after other treatments. In some cases, taking the medication before SAD begins can prevent episodes.

THE ADOLESCENT BRAIN

Did you know that...
your teen's brain is actually overdeveloped, not underdeveloped?
Boys experience a neurologically related drop in empathy during their early teens, but girls don't?
If it were brain development that created risk-taking and sensation-seeking, would your 13-year-old would take bigger risks than your 17-year-old?

DSC families who have signed with our school's Happy Families Subscription, have access to Dr Justin Coulson's webinar that looks deep inside our teenager's brains, helping us to know what's really going on in there, and what we can do to help our teenagers make safe, healthy, wise decisions.
