5/6 News

It has been an awesome fortnight in the senior school with so many fun activities for our students where they have been engaged, having fun and as always, being kind.  We would like to say a huge thank you to all the parents who helped out with Hoop Time last Friday. Potentially a  real disaster due to a lack of staff from the Hoop Time organisers; once again our supportive parents stepped in to make the day such a success for the students. We are so grateful to our Sacred Heart community.

MATHS WEEK

Students have had an amazing time during our Maths Week celebrations. They have truly enjoyed the range of activities all based around different areas of the Maths curriculum. One of the highlights was the Green Hats activity, which as you can see by the number of photos. It was an amazing opportunity to showcase their creativity as they focused on area and perimeter, pattern, balance, mass, structural integrity and general problem solving skills.

ENGLISH

This term, our focus has been on letter writing, looking at formal and informal language. The students have been exploring different forms of language and what is appropriate to use in a variety of different settings. They've been writing letters using  migration as a topic and Yr.6 have also been able to apply these skills when applying for the Sacred Heart Sleep Out.

In these letters, the students have been encouraged to incorporate new vocabulary and skills learned from our spelling and grammar lessons. A stronger focus on editing their grammar has seen a positive shift in their writing outcome.

Inquiry -Migration  Populate or Perish

We have been exploring the history of Australian Migration. The major focus we have had over the last fortnight has been the role the White Australia Policy and Populate or Perish played in the history. They students explored the dictation test migrants had to do in an attempt to settle in Australia during the time of the White Australia Policy.

Youth Leadership Program Using Public Speaking

The classes have thoroughly enjoyed developing their leadership and public speaking skills through the Youth Leadership Program and are now up to developing their second speech. The students are getting much better at presenting their work, using greater expression and less referencing on their script i.e. more eye contact. It has been amazing to see the students undertake different roles throughout the program, and a notable highlight is the manner in which they evaluate one another's speech, providing wonderful feedback.

Hoop Time by Teagan and Skye

Last Friday the 5/6s had their Hoop time day. It was amazing to be back at for the first time in 2 years as it had been cancelled the past few years due to Covid restrictions. There were 2 All Star boys teams, 1 All Star girls team and lots of future star teams as basketball is very popular at Sacred Heart, so most of the students were involved. There were a lot of other schools that we were competing against so we got to play multiple games through out day, all of which were played in such good spirit by all students. It was a really fun day and all the students really enjoyed it. One of the highlights was when we all came together to cheer for the All Star boys in the grand final. Sadly they lost the game but it didn’t stop them from playing great basketball and trying their best.

The All Star girls team were able to make it all the way to the Grand Final and win the whole thing which was very exciting. They are looking forward to going to progressing to the next step of the competition.

Thanks for Mr T for organising it to happen and for all the teachers and parents that helped out by coaching and scoring. The day couldn't have happened without all their hard work.

We are all very grateful that we got to have this experience and we all had a very fun time.
