Ahoy me Hearties...How are your sea legs????

Term 3 week 5

What a great start to the week…the wonderful Cam from Greenhats Workshop came to school and inspired us to get creative. The best thing about these simple blocks is that they challenge us in many, many ways.

Firstly, we use fine motor skills to balance and build. The blocks will stand on any side but you have to be super careful and think about HOW they are placed for best position.

Resilience is required as many, many times our blocks fell and designs failed…but did we give up?  No WAY!!! The possibilities are endless and we made some fantastic structures, it was unbelievable how one simple shape could be used to make our creations.

That brings me to the best thing about these blocks; CREATIVITY. Our imaginations went wild and we made round shapes, platforms, tall structures, flat designs, domino tracks and even words!!! Although, maybe the best bit is the fun and laughter and team spirit we all shared? All in all, we had a great time and I am sure on wet weather days we will enjoy using our Green hat Blocks that we have in our levels.

Thank you Mr Blake for organising this for us and we hope everyone enjoys watching our videos and seeing our photos. What a magic way to start MATHS WEEK.

We had lots of fun this week investigating how to weigh an elephant, calculating the value of our names, guessing lollies in the jar and doing lots of other maths fun. 3/4CM even went to our Maker Space Area in the Library and made models of our designs for weighing a basketball as an investigation after reading the story, 'How Cao Chong Weighed an Elephant'. It was encouraging to see the students thinking, designing, planning, creating and trialling different ideas. Congratulations to everyone for participating so enthusiastically.  3/4CM took the task to another level.

On Thursday we had our excursion to Polly Woodside. Ms Collins and Mrs Murphy with the help of Felicity and Rosemary took the first group and we left school at 8:20am and caught the train to South Wharf in the City for our session from 10am-12nooon.

Ms Tench and Ms Levy with the help of Zey and Lisa left school at 10:20am with the second group for their session from 12:30-2:30pm.

The children were very well behaved and enjoyed immersing themselves into the role of an 'ordinary sailor' under the watchful eye of of First Mates Libby and Sandy. We learnt how to steer and make sure our sails were full of wind, saw how they hauled the anchor, we scrubbed the deck, rang the bell using codes, hauled cargo, saw the hull area where the cargo was held, saw how cramped the crews quarters were and how lavish the captains area was. There was so much to see and learn! We look forward to using our insights from this to complete our First Fleet work in the next week or so.

Here are some of our photos...

We would also like to welcome Miss Zoe Richards to the team. Zoe is a final year student at ACU completing her final teaching rounds and will be with 3/4CM for 4 weeks. We look forward to sharing her journey to be a teacher and doing some wonderful work with her. Miss Richards joined 3/4CM this week for Monday and Tuesday to meet us, get to know a bit about our routines and to do some planning; she was very impressed with the school and our community. Please take the opportunity to come up, introduce yourself and meet her at after school pick-up on the oval in the afternoons while she is with us.

Don’t forget that we have our Athletics Carnival next week on Tuesday. Meet us at the Sandringham Athletics track wearing your house colours and ready for a fun time. Remember to make sure you sign in with your teacher on arrival and bring your lunch, snacks and water bottles in your school bag and put them under your House Shelter. It may be cold so have a jacket handy and make sure all clothing items are clearly labelled with names. Parent helpers are required to help the day run smoothly so if you haven’t already contacted MR T please do so ASAP or look for further information elsewhere in this newsletter.

As next Friday is a Pupil Free Day we have extended the Homework due date to the Monday, please remember to complete all required tasks (including Diary task AND READING) and bring it in Monday 22nd August.

As always we are available on the Oval for a chat every afternoon at pick up, or for a longer appointment please email us.

Until next time,
