This week we had lots of fun participating in Maths week activities. We had fun creating, exploring and problem solving during the Green Hats Incursion using planks.
Students also completed rich math tasks during the week using picture story books. Some of the books used were
The Greedy Triangle- Students explored 2D shapes and created their own.
Uno's Garden - Students investigated data collection and kept tallies.
1 is a Snail 10 is a Crab- Students delved into looking at numbers combinations and multiples of numbers using models and a mathematical equations.
Game Time -
Students investigated the relationships between the various units of time—seconds, minutes, hours, days, and weeks—and how clocks and calendars represent these units. They then completed a 'time' treasure hunt.
Preps are looking at help seeking. They explored things that they need help with and things that they don't.
We looked at an episode of Bluey called 'Duck Cake' where Bluey learnt by doing things herself, she was helping others and made herself happy. You may wish to revisit this with your child at home.
We have been sequencing stories and making story maps whilst consolidating what we have learnt from our MSL lessons such as closed syllables and the ch/sh digraphs.
We have been learning the counting on strategy using different methods.
During Respectful Relationships we have been looking at help seeking- how to ask friends for help and what to do when a friend asks for help. Students completed team challenges to explore how to help others and what they needed to do in order to get everyone into the hoop.
This week was the feast of Saint Mary MacKillop. We looked closely at her story and one of her most memorable quotes "Never see a need without doing something about it" This linked in nicely with our social justice topic 'Our differences and Our Privileges'.
We are continuing to progress nicely with out MSL lessons. This week students built upon the knowledge they have of closed syllables and looked a 2 syllable words when both syllables are closed. Have a look at the video for some closed 2 syllable words.
Students completed their persuasive writing genre this week by writing letters to their teachers to open the mystery box. It was great to see students consolidate spelling approaches they have been learning during MSL and follow the structure whilst using strong persuasive language. We think they did an awesome job and they managed to persuade their teachers to reveal the surprise.
The 1/2s have been exploring division by sharing/dividing a group of objects into equal sized groups. Some students were able to investigate the conditions that required a remainder. There were lots of hands on and open ended tasks to suit all ability levels.
Our inquiry unit 'Our differences and our Privileges' continued this week by looking at more photos from Remexio, East Timor and comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences. We also explored the word 'privilege' and discussed what it meant to be privileged.
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome 3 student teachers who are joining the junior school team. We love welcoming student teachers from the various universities to Sacred Heart. They come with new ideas, bring some extra energy into our classrooms. and their extra sets of eyes really are so valuable.
