David's Message

Dear Sunny Heights Community,

We have a few big events coming up and there have been a few date changes to note. In just over a week we have National Science Week, with some great events for students including a visit from the Botanic Garden's team, extracting strawberry DNA and connecting to some creepy crawlies with a visit from Ardoch. The following week, from the 22nd to the 26th August, we have book week. On Tuesday of that week, the 23rd August, there will be a pupil free day. Wednesday 24th will the costume parade - dress up as your favourite book or book character!

At the very end of term, staff will engage in a professional practice day. This will take place on the final Friday of term, meaning that school will finish on Thursday 15th September. As such, Big Childcare will be available from Friday 16th September, as well as all throughout the holiday break.

We are always really excited to hear about our students' successes both in and out of school. In the past few weeks I have been chatting with Jasper in grade 5, who has competed in, and won, a number of Ninja competitions. He was very proud to be able to show me his medal. This has got us thinking about how we can plan for play spaces in the future that have a range of entry points, including for our grade 5 and 6 students who are looking for something a bit more demanding. We also have to congratulate Nukutai, one of our Grade 6 Sports Leaders, who has been selected by School Sports Victoria for their under 12s team; Nukutai is becoming an exceptional sporting superstar and I know his family are just as proud as we are of his accomplishments.

Our Library Leader, Amelie, has been busy, carefully sorting the books in the library with the help of Amarachi and Shayla. They were also really stoked with the amazing books that were bought and donated by our school community during Parent Teacher Interviews. Our relationship with the Younger Sun Bookshop is a strong one, and they carefully curated a range of books that represent different cultures and religions, strong female leads and engaging non-fiction. During Book week on Friday the 26th August between 8:00am and 9:30am, we will have the Younger Sun bookstore back so you can purchase books for your child from their latest selection.
