Junior School

Over the holidays many Stage 3 students, and a handful of Year 7 students undertook a trip to Victoria. The “Vic Trip” returned after a few years hiatus, due to COVID-19.

Mrs Lori Gerrard led the trip and was accompanied by Mr Steve Coote, Miss Louise Smyth and myself. We had an amazing time, tracing the steps of the Kelly Gang and discovering the stories of the Gold Rush in regional Victoria. The trip was an opportunity for students to develop their curiosity, independence and resilience. The students were so respectful and well-behaved and the staff were so proud of the way they represented Blue Mountains Grammar School everywhere we went.

During the recent Professional Development days, the Junior School staff began an inquiry into how we teach Mathematics. We will be spending this term learning more about Mathematics and looking for ways to develop and invigorate our practice. A new Mathematics syllabus will be implemented across K – 2 by all NSW schools next year, so this is a great opportunity to be diving into learning about Mathematics together. We look forward to sharing about the great learning our students are undertaking in Mathematics too.

It was wonderful to welcome our students back to campus this week, as well as a new teacher or two. Madame Judy Murray is with us this term teaching French (while Madame O’Hara is living her best life in Europe enjoying Long Service Leave). Mrs Jannine Walker has also joined the team and will be taking the Stage 1 Clownfish class. Mrs Cunneen will be with us until the end of Week 2, when the Springwood campus will farewell her. Mrs Walker and Mrs Cunneen are enjoying the opportunity to teach together and complete a really thorough handover.

I can’t wait to let you know about all the wonderful learning that takes place this term.

Basketball - Term 3, Week 1

On Monday, 18th July, BMGS Swish played the Sharp Shooters. With a reduced number of players on the court due to the school holidays, the boys enjoyed a good run on the court.

The Sharp Shooters are currently in second place on the ladder and the boys made them work hard to score. Initially there were some gaps in their defence, however, once they tightened that up, they were able to force some errors for their opposition and had some great runs to their goals. This was a really exciting game to watch as the boys did have a number of opportunities at goal. Unfortunately the boys lost 28-16. Thank you for the support on the sidelines from all of the parents.

On Tuesday, 19th July, the BMGS Stars started a new round Basketball. With only five players on the court, the students enjoyed two full games with no subs. We won the first game 6-4 and lost the second game 16-12. The students are becoming a lot more confident at dribbling the ball straight away to try and get it down their end. It was wonderful to see a lot of the goals that were scored were as a result of a team effort with excellent defence.
