Ringwood Secondary College students Kaila Bergmann and Klay Po received top honours this week for their outstanding VCE results in 2021.
Kaila Bergmann received a Premier’s VCE Award for excellence in Visual Communication Design and Klay Po received Premier’s VCE Award for excellence in Karen. This puts them among the top VCE students in the state in 2021. 298 of Victoria’s brightest students were recognised by this year’s Premier’s VCE Awards.
Kaila received a perfect study score of 50 and recently her School Assessed Task (SAT) folio was displayed at Melbourne Museums ‘Seasons of Excellence-Top Designs’. Kaila is currently undertaking her final year of VCE at Ringwood Secondary College.
Faced with many challenges, including COVID-19, both Kaila and Klay never wavered from their studies showing dedication and commitment during the turbulent year both working tirelessly towards achieving their personal best. Both students were involved in many programs at the college and our community is very proud of their fine achievements to achieve such strong academic results.
I would like to acknowledge both Kaila and Klay’s teachers and educational support staff who supported them throughout their studies.

Year 7 Humanities
During the closing weeks of term 2, the year 7 humanities classes had the once in a lifetime opportunity to experience Open Horizons - Ancient Greek Journeys and Connections, a Melbourne Museum exclusive exhibition of significant items from the prestigious National Archaeological Museum in Athens
It tells the story of ideas, influences and connections that form and build communities. The exhibition took students on a journey through Ancient Greece exploring how the trade of ideas and goods influenced Greek culture, and in turn influenced the ancient world. This was the culmination of our unit on Ancient Greece.
The day also consisted of a visit to The First Peoples exhibition, at Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre to experience the knowledge, stories, culture, objects and images of our first nations peoples. Students were able to hear the local languages of the different groups found throughout Victoria, as well as getting to view a variety of objects used in ceremony, farming, and education. This was supported by time spent on the Milarri garden trail which allowed students to discover the plants and waterways significant to First Nations people of south-eastern Australia and the traditional uses of indigenous plants.
The students represented the school magnificently, demonstrating their best behaviour and a great day was had by all.

Year 7 Geography
Year 7 students started Geography by learning some basic Geographical skills: how to make a proper map using BOLTSS, how to read a compass rose and use direction, how to read a map and use grid references.
Students have enjoyed the challenge of using their new knowledge to create proper maps, determine the best strategy to place fielders to stop Steve Smith hitting 100 runs! Read and locate locations on topographic maps and play battleships.
Students in 7F applied their grid reference knowledge to the game of battleships to strategically deploy their ships and sink their opponents' using grid references. Students enjoyed the challenge and had fun trying to outwit their opponents.
Students in 7H enjoyed getting outside to put in to practice the theory of using a compass.

In Dollars and Sense students this week students have explored banking and interest rates evaluating their own situation and looking for the best accounts, Leant about saving and ACT goals and then identified if they are a spender or saver and budgeting in playing monopoly.

Ace Your Exams
On the 18th of July, the Year 11's attended the “Ace Your Exams” presentation held by Elevate Education.
The aim of the presentation was to equip students with effective strategies that they could use around exam time. The presenters covered a wide range of topics including; common mistakes students make during exam preparation, easy and effective steps to stay organised before exams, and most importantly, strategies on how to stay calm and “Ace” our exams! These strategies included reviewing past papers to identify where you may have lost marks, re-attempting incorrect questions, asking your teachers for advice, learning from other students, and creating an exam planner.
Not only was the talk informative, but the interactive aspects of the session made it incredibly engaging and fun to listen to!
