Year Advisers Report

Years 7, 9 & 11

Year 7 are looking well rested after their break and like they are ready to tackle Term 3. I hope over the holidays they were able to take their eyes off a device and get outside to enjoy the little bit sunshine that there was. We have many events to look forward to this term including our Performing Arts Nights (PAN) and Henry Kendall's Got Talent. I am excited to see their well-developed drama and performance skills be put to a better use than in the classroom or on the sporting field (wink wink).

I have had an overwhelming amount of SRC Application forms, and it makes me so proud as a Year Adviser to see how many students in my year are willing to take on leadership roles and become apart of our Henry Kendall Community. Day after day I feel grateful that this group of amazing students represent myself and Year 7 as a year group at Henry Kendall.

I really enjoyed meeting many parents at Interview Night and I look forward to meeting many more in person. The students are so lucky to have such amazing role models at home and it really does shine through in their personalities at school. Overall Year 7 are such wonderful respectful students, and their uniforms are looking fabulous. Keep up the amazing work Year 7.

There has been many sporting, academic and performing art opportunities for Year 9 to start off the second semester for 2022. Some students have had a chance to compete in sporting events including an Oztag Gala Day and Netball in the Sydney North Competition.

The 100 hour iStem and 200 hour IST classes have both had opportunities to extend their skills and learn new opportunities with an excursion and incursion. iStem students attended a day at Gosford Hospital where they learnt about the health industry pathways and the employment opportunities in Health in relation to iStem. IST students competed in a Robotics Day, which included two challenges – a maze and robots wars, where they were able to show the skills, they learnt during class on programming robots to meet a challenge.

Our performing students have also been able to showcase their talent in our recent PAN night, and we also had students providing technical support with sound and lighting during both rehearsals and live performance. Both groups of students gained a positive experience and skills by being involved in this fantastic event.

In the second week of term, was parent teacher night, due to COVID this was the first time our Year 9 families were able to attend and meet many of their children’s teachers. It was a great opportunity to talk to parents and discuss how we can work together to best help their child and provide a positive school environment.

I am looking forward to hearing and seeing Year 9 participate in many more events and activities throughout the rest of the term.

The first few weeks of this term have been exceptionally busy for quite a few Year 11 students. We’ve had NAIDOC day celebrations at which Year 11 Cooinda students were leaders and mentors for the younger students. Our musical members of the cohort impressed the audience across two nights of PAN. Several students were recognised for their academic and extra-curricular achievements at the Gosford Learning Community Celebration Assembly for Education Week. And members of the cohort have been selected to represent our school at Central Showcase. There is a lot to be proud of in Year 11!

Of particular note, over the last few weeks Year 11 students have been working through the application. Ten students applied for the role and based on their responses defining leadership and their reasons for wanting to represent the school, all were invited to an interview with myself, Mr Backhouse and Mrs James.

We were all impressed by the passion and professionalism expressed by the students. Last Friday, the applicants presented a speech to Year 11 and staff and both audiences voted for their preferences. Again, we were all blown away by how articulate and enthusiastic all applicants were in their presentations – they even had some staff in tears while expressing their gratitude for the school!

Congratulations to all Year 11 students who have gone above and beyond in their extra-curriculars so far this term!
