What's Happening in the Classroom

Year 5/6

Starting the term exploring the universe

This term in Grade 5/6, we are working hard and learning a lot. In the first three weeks of term, we have done some scientific investigations h researched and presented information to the class and even played in a basketball tournament. This week the year 6’s will develop their leadership skills with another Our House Spirit incursion.

In English, the students have been learning to connect to self, other texts and the world when reading. They have been exploring the structures and features of informative texts and are now beginning to learn about explanation writing.

In Maths, we have just finished a unit on Chance. The students conducted different chance experiments, including one to test whether whispering “Give me a six” to the dice before rolling increases the chance of getting a six. Their results clearly showed that this is not true!

Whispeing, "Give me a six,'' to the dice doesn't increase the chances of getting a six.
What if you sang to the dice before you rolled it?

In Religious Education, our big question is, “Where do we see God?”. In groups, the students researched different faiths and compared them to the Catholic faith. They then presented their findings to the class. Now we are looking at the Holy Trinity and the three persons of God.

In Inquiry, we aim to find out “How do natural disasters affect our world?” We have explored our solar system, made slime and tried to decide if it is a solid, liquid or gas (ask your child if they can remember what it is!), froze different liquids to see if their state of matter changes and this week we will be looking at the structure of the Earth!
