Learning and Teaching in Mathematics

Over the coming four weeks, we will have a whole school maths focus on place value, fractions and decimals. All students will be engaging in hands-on experiences that will support them in developing their understanding of these concepts.

I can count numbers

Prep students will focus on working with numbers to 20. The students are working on being able to count forwards and backwards as well as connecting number names to numerals and quantities. One skill that the prep students are currently working on is subitising. This is the ability to name a small collection of objects without counting them.

Year 1&2

The Year 1 and Year 2 students develop their number sense when working with numbers to 100 and beyond. They are developing the skill of partitioning, which is breaking numbers into smaller parts to work with them more efficiently. The students also apply their knowledge of place value to recognise how many hundreds, tens and ones make up a number. They will learn to work with halves, quarters and eighths in fractions.

Fractions
Fractions

The senior students have been working in different maths groups across the two classrooms led by Mrs Drury and Mrs Elicano. This allows the students to work with other students in new ways.

The senior students investigate fractions by comparing, ordering and placing them on number lines. They are also developing their understanding of the connection between fractions and decimals by learning how to partition decimal numbers into tenths,

                                                                                    hundredths and thousandths.
