Intermediate Basketball - Champions Cup

The SJC Intermediate Basketball squad were lucky enough to receive a nomination to compete for the Basketball Victoria ‘Champions Cup’.

Only the best basketball schools in Victoria are nominated to compete for this prestigious prize. This was the first ever nomination for St James College.

Our first game vs St Monica's College had an early start - 8.30 am in a freezing cold Dandenong stadium. The young men played hard from the start, taking the lead and holding it for the entire game. It was a victorious effort for our young men winning 32-24.

Up next, our competition was Box Hill Sports Secondary High School. Two previous NBA top 5 draft picks are past students of this school, so it was always going to be a tough ask. In a gallant loss, the final score was 47-21.

Lastly SJC faced Rowville Secondary College, another sport specific high school. Unfortunately we were outmatched after a long and tiring day, losing 64-23.

I am extremely proud of our team for their efforts on this day and across the entire SIS season.

We have some great talent and positive sportsmanship that should make all members of our community proud.

Congratulations on a successful and outstanding season to:

Touch Rugby

Touch Rugby ran in Term 3 and was introduced for the first time to Year 9 and 10 students as a SIS competition. Ms Payne was the coach and Mr Brown was our assistant coach.

Our first match was at home and we played St John's College Dandenong. I thought we all played well, considering most of our team had never played touch rugby before and we managed to defeat St John’s 9-3.

The second match we played was away in Beaconsfield against St Francis Xavier Beaconsfield and we were able to get our second win on the board with the score 9-3. Special mention to Mr Brown, who had to step in as umpire for the game.

The third match was against Padua Mornington. I thought Padua was the hardest team we played this term and our boys kept turning the ball over, but we put in the fight and came on top the scores St James 4-2 Padua.

Our fourth game was against Berwick Grammar. They were our toughest opposition as it was raining and windy the entire game, which led to many dropped balls and unforced errors. Though the conditions were challenging we ended up winning by 1 try, the scores were 5-4 to St James.

The last game we played was the grand final and we say that because we hadn't lost a game and it was our last game for the season. The team we played were St Francis Xavier Officer and we were able to win quite comfortably, getting our largest winning margin to 7 tries, defeating St Francis 9-2.

Every person in the team played a significant part in becoming SIS Touch Rugby Champions this season and their encouragement and sportsmanship to each other is to be acknowledged. As being the captain of the team and play rugby, I was very impressed by the skill level of the boys and very happy that we came up on top victorious and undefeated. We celebrated as a team with a pizza lunch to reflect on our successful first season.

Thank you to both our coaches for all their time and support given to us over the term.

SIS Intermediate Soccer

In 2016, the school soccer team played 5 games in their quest to become champions for a second year in a row.

The boys were faced with some tight, tough games and a few easy wins along the way but the performance level did not drop no matter what team we came up against. We started the season with a spurt of extremely difficult games.

The first game was against our rivals St John's, over the years we have never beaten St John's by more than one goal and the results tend to go either way. It was made challenging after being 1-1 in the last 20 minutes of game but the boys managed to dig deep and find the winning goal with a great effort by Oscar and managed to hold the lead until the end.

The second game was quite an easy win for the boys and despite the injury concerns we had we managed to win 8-0. The boys were in a  fantastic position moving forward to the later rounds.

In the third game, the boys were up against St Peters another fairly easy win although it took a while to get on the scoreboard, once on the scoreboard though the flood gates opened and the boys managed to find their way to a convincing victory.

The fourth game was quite a challenging game as we went up against another undefeated team but again we managed to hold our ground and win the game despite using a bigger team, some quality efforts by Dean helped us to a nice victory, the defence was also extremely solid.

The fifth game was the grand final, both teams were undefeated and as we went up against Padua all was on the line. Padua managed to score the opening goal which made it quite difficult for us but we managed to get an equaliser just before half time. It was all down to the last half, the last half of football the Year 10s would ever play for St James. The boys really got down to business and functioned as a team fluently, great progression from our goalkeeper and defence to our midfield and finally to the strikers. We finally broke the deadlock and made it 2-1 and from there it was all St James. We ended up winning the game with a  4-1 victory thanks to a quality hat trick by Oscar.

The Jimmy boys were champions once again.
