Digital animator

Jess D’Ali says she’s been obsessed with animated films for as long as she can remember. She learnt to code and soon realised these new skills were intrinsic to the digital animation industry. Now, she’s working with animation artists to develop content for emerging augmented reality and virtual reality platforms like the Oculus Rift and the new Apple ARKit.

CS + sports

Code-based skills are in high demand in the sports industry. “Mechanical, electronic, software and materials engineering are all very relevant to sports technology. A sports-related CS career could involve searching through data to help coaches evaluate game strategies, identify talent and predict results. It might also include developing better sports simulators or more realistic ‘exergames’, which combine exercise with gaming for fitness and rehabilitation.

Dancing with physics

Merritt Moore is defying the laws of career expectations by becoming a professional dancer with a PhD in Quantum Optics too! She shows us how to successfully combine Arts + STEM to become both a professional dancer and a physicist.

Science + humanities = creative careers

Finding ways to combine science and the arts is crucial if we want to tackle some of the major challenges facing the world in the 21st century, says social researcher and PhD student Jasper Montana at the University of Cambridge’s Department of Geography in the UK. Combining science with the humanities gives you the chance to hone your skills, think critically and communicate science to the public in a creative way – for example through writing or illustration or video-making.

Creative careers in science communication

Biomedical animator Dr Drew Berry says the classes he loved the most in school were biology and graphic design. After studying cell biology at the University of Melbourne and working as the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research’s “Photoshop guy”, he now combines his knowledge of cell biology and microscopy with animation to reveal molecular action inside our bodies. Read more about this story here:

Making music With computer science

Can you imagine creating careers in computer science and music production from playing music on an iPad, or predicting viral videos on Youtube? At the Australian National University, students are using computer science music production to shape and enhance their musical ideas. An algorithm identifies what particular gesture they’re doing at what time of the performance, and then it categorises the gestures. They use data from their touches to understand their musical intentions.
