Keeping children safe over the holidays

As we head into a long holiday break, I thought I would offer some ideas for safe partying. These ideas came from a Play it Safe information night presented jointly by Victoria Police and Access Health and Community.

Here are some key points from the Victoria Police presentation:

  • Call 000 during a party and close it down if unsure
  • Register your party with the Victoria Police (use link below)

http://www.police.vic.gov.au/content.asp?Document_ID=9566

  • Noise – follow EPA Guidelines (see link below)
  • Alcohol:
    • Know your legal responsibilities
    • Written permission if child is under 18
    • Prevent intoxication – have a responsible non-drinking adult serving alcohol
  • Drugs are illegal at all times
  • Exercise zero tolerance and ask people to leave if needed
  • Make sure the rules are clear as to where the party is taking place (ie not bedrooms, pool). Put Out of bounds signs on appropriate doors.
  • Have at least one adult trained with first aid – call 000 for an ambulance in an emergency.

As always, I am happy to speak with any students, parents or specialists during the term.

I hope everyone has a restful and happy break and I will see you in the New Year.
