Football
Congratulations to the following students who have been selected in representative squads for the September school holidays:
Oliver Wortley – Greater Western Victoria Rebels U 15 V Line Cup
Eliza Jagger and Mitzi Adamson – Western Bulldogs NGA U 16 Squad
The Western Bulldogs/THAC Football Academy began its 8 week program last Monday with the ambassador Liam Picken coming down to the inaugural session to help out. 19 students have committed to the program and it is an exciting time for them and the whole college sporting program!
With one round to go before finals both College Magpies teams are in strong positions to give themselves a chance of taking out the premiership. The Under 16s sit comfortably on top of the ladder while the Under 13s are in 2nd and can take confidence from defeating the previously undefeated St Andrew’s in their last game.
On Wednesday this week we had the Senior Girls’ GD football competition held at Pedrina Park.
This was a most successful day for the school with our team performing remarkably well to be undefeated in 6 games of football and win the shield for the 3rd year in a row! With more than half of the team being made up of bottom age players (Year 10) we certainly look to have a great future in this competition in the short term also. Better players for the day included Grace Austin (medal for best player), Mitzi Adamson (dominated the contested football), Beccy Koch (kicked 9 goals for the day), Annabel Hetherington, Cassidy Beal, Jedah Huf, Jorjia Farrugia and Indi Talay.
Cross Country
On Tuesday we saw our strongest cross country runners compete at Bundoora Park in Melbourne in the annual ICCES Cross Country event. On the challenging state cross country course in perfect but cold conditions our runners gave their very best and we came 6th in the overall shield competition. Well done to the captains Sam O’Shannessy and Hannah Russell for all their efforts this season and the students who committed to lunchtime training sessions should be commended also. Hopefully we will see even better results and commitment across the 2020 cross country season.
Top ten finishers in their division included:
Izack Mayfield – 3rd in Year 7/8 boys
Hannah Russell – 5th in Year 11/12 girls
Sam O’Shannessy – 7th in Year 11/12 boys
Sam Crawford - 10th in Year 9/10 boys

The 7-9 Girls had a great day all laughing and enjoying themselves as much as possible. They finished the day with 3 wins and 3 losses. College Strikers - BYE
Division One Women
The Division One Women had their closest contest of the season defeating Dunkeld 3-0. Dunkeld defended very well and the Strikers found it hard to penetrate. Phoebe and Hannah Russell were able to break through with some clever short corner variations. Nikita Cavill and Ruby Cush are enjoying a very consistent season across the half line and it is quite a challenge for any opposition to navigate around the reach of Chloe Andersen at fullback. Alyssa Hocking is enjoying her best season and is working very well with the speed demon Gracie Austin on the wing.
Our B Grade Blades and Scorchers could not be separated with a 0-0 result probably a fair outcome. After a slightly flat first half, players from both sides lifted to create scoring opportunities at both ends of the ground. Kel McNaughton and Clare Cummings in goals were impossible to beat saving their sides on numerous occasions. Rosie Dopheide , Emily Crawford, Natalie Featherston, Millie Davidson and Nina Pern were amongst the better players.
Hockey Umpiring Success
Congratulations to Chloe Andersen who has been chosen to umpire at the 2019 Under 13 Australian Carnival to be held in Hobart, Tasmania from the 2-8th October. This is the second year in a row Chloe has been asked to umpire at this event. All states will be represented, and Chloe will be umpiring alongside the most promising junior umpires in Australia. This is a wonderful opportunity for Chloe and just reward for her hard work and dedication.
We look forward to hearing how the week goes.

Under 16 and Men's Hockey
Saturday provided a fine start to the weekend for the Under 16 teams. Mrs Winter Cooke worked her magic and coached two winning teams, her own College Gold and College Red as we seek a replacement for GAPper Fred Martin. She reports on the two games as follows:
“College Gold has a strong win against Coleraine Black last weekend. Isaac Hocking dominated in the circle scoring three goals. Euan Sutherland, Alyssa Hocking and Clancy Munro showed their strength around the ground with fierce tackling and follow through. It was the best game we have played this season, utilizing our combined strengths to win 5-3.
College Red defeated Monivae, 5-4, in a tight and well fought contest. Eren Zehir scored 3 polished goals, Ciaran Nelson and Matthew Spence both scored one goal. The team started combining well and made opportunities in the circle, with Charley Falla-Jones’s speed benefitting the team. Emily McNaughton and Thomas Stratmann played well in defence. Emily saved the game.
College Blue was the third Under 16 team in action and they recorded a 9-1 victory over Coleraine Red. This was a strange game: Blue held the ascendancy for most of the first half but lost control of the game late in the half and for a time early in the second period. During a fifteen-minute burst in the second half, Blue played excellent team-oriented hockey, characterised by early passes and effective running into space and this finally sealed the result. Overall, goals were spread with seven players finding the net: Ben Potter and Harry Austin scored twice each with other scorers being Jack Austin, Lucy Roberts, Will Merrin, Jake Andersen and Ted Koch. I thought Lucy Roberts and Nat Featherston played excellent games and Ben Potter also provided good run while a number of regulars continued to work hard.
On Sunday, the Open men’s team were forced to work hard to record a 4-1 victory over traditional rivals Monivae. Ferg Roberts scored two of the goals: Reagan Simons and Jono Lee added the others. This was Ferg’s first full game since he returned from illness and his first goal of the day was one of his trademark backstick shots! We were pleased also to welcome Jono Lee back after injury and he managed a goal in the reduced time on field as we eased him back. Eren Zehir played his second game of the weekend after some six weeks away in Turkey and Central Australia – and he began to provide his usual hard driving running. Tane Nelson, despite a slight muscle twinge, and Reagan Simons controlled the game with their control and movement and Jake Andersen stepped up from Under 16 level displaying some fine composure and control on the half line. This was a solid, workmanlike performance against a dogged opponent whose goalie played extremely well.
So it was a pleasing weekend results-wise. Each team appears well placed in their competition’s top four and all have the chance to push for the double chance in the next four weeks of competition.
