Round 1

St James College 22 defeated St Francis Xavier College 7

A fantastic start to the season! St James College travelled to St Francis Xavier College, Beaconsfield, for the Round 1 clash of the titans. In the past, St Francis Xavier has assembled very strong handball teams, however, on this occasion, they were no match for the visiting Jimmy's Boys. From the first whistle, St James were ruthless with their defending, pushing their opponents back and forcing them to shoot from deep positions, making them panic. In attack, St James were tough, physical and confident with charging through small gaps to shoot. It was encouraging to see St James players laying blocks for their teammates, which creates space for strong shots on goal.

Round 2

St James College 17 defeated John Paul College 11

In our first home game for the season, St James were too strong for John Paul. Our fierce intensity in the first quarter stunned John Paul, as we flew to a 6 - 2 lead. On our smaller sized court, play was congested, which made scoring difficult. John Paul tightened their defence and clear shots were hard to find. John Paul started to improve in the second half, however, Matthew scored three amazing goals from long range shots, which steadied the ship. Jack scored some tough, physical goals which also gave the team confidence to win the game. A great defensive effort from all St James players. Well done. Two out of two wins!

Round 3

St James College 20 defeated St Johns College 15

This was a physical game early with some unlawful pushing from both teams, which caused anger and frustration. At half time, both teams were reminded about the rules of Handball, where physical contact from side on is only allowed when you are trying to maintain your court position and stand your ground. Extending your arms to push an opponent, or bump an opponent off balance, is illegal. After these rules were clarified, the second half was played in good spirits, with all players shaking hands at the final whistle and smiling about the competitive nature of the contest. St Johns had no answers for our quick ball movement and accurate shots on goal. St James found open shots on goal by driving to the line to draw two defenders, then dishing off a pass to an open player. 3 wins from 3 games. We can smell the SIS Championship.

Round 4

St James College 14 defeated St Peters Clyde North 10

In an away game at Casey Stadium, St James College won in a tight contest against St Peters. Unfortunately, Casey Stadium did not have the 6m handball line painted on their indoor court, so we had to use the basketball 3 point line to mark the goal area. This made it more difficult to score, as players were shooting 2m further out, which our team was not used to. Throughout the match, the score was never more than 1 - 2 goals the difference. It was a scrappy game, with both teams defending really well. There were some great goals scored from long distances by Matthew. With his great leadership skills, Josh defended really well and marshalled the troops into zone positions. Josh scored some great goals too, with his constant driving to the goal line keeping the St Peters defenders honest. Finlay and Alfie both demonstrated class, controlling the mid court battles with their skillfull stealing, dribbling and passing. Louis was tough and physical as usual. Billy was a brick wall at the top of the key and dished off some fantastic goal assist passes. Chris was fearless in goals, blocking some monster shots with his legs. In the end, at 10 all, the difference between the two teams was Damon. Damon won the game for us with some amazing goals from the corner. What a win! Four wins from four games. One game to go for clean sweep of the competition.

Round 5

St James College 13 draw with Padua College 13

"We are the Champions my friend. And we keep on fighting 'til the end!" St James College are the outright winners of SIS Handball for 2020, thanks to the Round 5 draw with Padua College, who lost a game early in the season. St James achieved four wins and one draw for the season. Our Round 5 game against Padua was another nail biter. Both teams defended extremely well. Our ball movement and passing game wasn't sharp enough this week to break away from Padua, who fought back in the final two minutes to earn themselves a draw. Josh and Matthew were amazing for us, scoring the majority of our goals and putting enormous pressure on Padua with their relentless tenacity. Billy grew in stature with a couple of crucial goals. Louis also chipped in with some powerful goals on the fast break. Congratulations gentlemen on a fine season.

We opened up with myself and Braeden bowling. Braeden bowled very tight and full lines and was very unlucky not to get a wicket.

Woodleigh's opening batsman got off to a great start going at 7 an over so we had to do something different. Jack came on to bowl his crafty off spin and he turned the game around picking up 2 wickets in 2 balls. After Jacks masterclass over, Lachlan came on to bowl and he bowled really well. Lachlan and Jack got the run rate down to less then 5. After that great spell, Joel and Harrison bowled good lines and kept the runs down. During that time we managed to pick up a wicket with a terrific run out from Harrison. Luke bowled a great spell, picking up 1/3 off his 2 overs. Bryce and Nathan bowled well like the previous bowlers. During the last couple of overs Joel, Jack, Lachlan, and my self bowled one more over each and we made the most of it picking up 3 wickets. Jack bowled first, and he bowled very well good lines and didn't get hit for many. Second last over, Lachlan picked up 2 wickets including a classic catch from myself. Then I finished off the innings picking up a wicket maiden. A massive effort from Cameron who was outstanding behind the stumps. We are chasing 150 to win. Let's hope round 1 will be a success like it was today.

We opened the batting with Braedan and Lachlan, with a great effort from Lachlan making a solid 25. 2 wickets down, Jack came in and again just like on the first day, he got us back into the game making a terrific 53 including 8 boundaries. Towards the end of the game we needed 40 off the last 4 overs then Rex came in putting in a great effort hitting 12 in quick time.

Solid start to the season with some excellent performances from the boys but Woodleigh were just to good for us on the day...this time.

We lost the toss and bowled. We opened up with myself and Lachlan, and we both bowled tight lines to their opening batsman. The Flinders Batsman started going at a run rate of 6 an over, and then I brought on Braedan and he bowled a good set picking up 2/18 off his four overs including a great catch from Rex. After that Archie came on and bowled and very good spell, picking up 1/7 off just 3 overs. But then Luke bowled the best, keeping the run rate down a little picking up 2/8 off just two overs including a good catch from Aiden. We are chasing 149 to win off 24 overs so we'll have to bat well this week. Flinders batted very well and we will do the same and hopefully round 2 will be a win for Jimmy's.

We lost 4/137 Lachlan and Jack opened up on day 2. We started going at 5 an over but then lost a wicket. But then Archie came in batting with Jack, and they got a good partnership of about 70-80. Jack yet again was player of the game picking up another 50, and Archie getting a good knock of 34. We batted very well but our bowling let us down a little, and just fell short of 11 runs. Solid effort from the Jimmies boys once again, let's hope that next game will be ours.

St James vs Berwick Grammar 1st innings St James 10/82

We opened up with Jack and Lachlan, both really good on the day, Lachlan finishing on 32 including 4 boundaries, Jack also did very well finishing with 15. After that partnership the Jimmy boys collapsed a bit finishing with low total, Lachlan was the best out of all of us on the day. Let's hope our bowlers will be a highlight for next week to get us over the line.
