The Treehouse Studio

We are off to an exciting start to the year in the Tree House Studio.

It is a Preshil tradition to screen print a t-shirt or hoodie as a memento in grade 5/6. The Peppercorns have been revisiting positive and negative space in preparation for designing their personalized stencils.  Later in the term we will be visiting the National Gallery of Victoria to see 'Escher X nendo: Between Two Worlds.' This excursion will tie into our unit 'Artists can build worlds that expand beyond their artworks.' We will explore optical illusions and perspective through a range of mediums including drawing, etching and lino cut.

In Sun Room Art, we have been tying into the classroom inquiry 'Understanding who I am can empower me' through the line of inquiry 'Photographs can be constructed to express who I am.'   We have looked at the power of framing and exploring how an image can tell a story through the photographic work of Joel Meyerowitz. The children also used framing to create abstract mystery photos. We explored how constructed and abstract a portrait can get by adopting Preshil alumni, and world famous photographer, Polly Borland's technique of using stockings and props. Later in the term we will be heading off to the Australian Center for the Moving Image (ACMI) for a workshop on stop motion animation.

The Lofties have been exploring line and colour as part of their inquiry into how 'Artists make decisions about how they use art elements and principles to express themselves.' We visited Buxton Contemporary to see an exhibition filled with colour and line called 'The garden of forking paths: Mira Gojak and Takehito Koganezawa.'   While eating our lunch in the Botanical Gardens and walking back to the train station, the children had their 'Art Eyes' on and were pointing out all the sculptures along the way.

The 5s are getting to know the Tree House Studio and have begun to look into how 'Understanding materials can help you to create art.'  They came up with a whole range of materials that they might use to make art.  Over the Term we will be exploring the qualities of different materials, engaging all the senses in our experimentation.

Art Club is up and running on Thursday lunchtimes. This term we are trialing a new approach. The children have come up with some different ideas and we will explore one each week.
