Building our community
We have made a wonderful start to the new school year in our beautifully renovated classroom. Sitting on the steps whilst stories are being read, looking out of windows that are our height as well as spotting the many rainbows that appear on the hardwood floors, have been just a few of the things that we love about our new room.
During our first few weeks we have been getting know each other by playing games and we have been trying our best to use each others names when we talk. We have also started sharing ideas about the ways in which we show the IB learner attributes during our days at Preshil. Some of us said we were risk takers by having a go at jumping from the fort onto the ground, whilst others said they were caring because we give our dog lots of cuddles.
We have been very independent in the kitchen during both fruit and lunchtime by learning how to use the microwave and sandwich press, as well as teaching our friends how to use it too. Exploring the Fives playground, not to mention the entire school has been the source of excitement for us. When we meet in a circle on the mat to talk about our playtimes we have had so many amazing stories to share with each other. If something has gone wrong, we are listening to our friends and finding ways to make things right.
Each Monday we have started sharing recounts of our weekend and then recording them into our writing books. We have also had a go and continuing handwriting patterns and even writing some numbers from 1 to 10. We have also started making a class alphabet book. First we used magazines to search for pictures and then we cut them out and glued them next to the sound that they start with.
As a group, we have also started forming our essential agreement. We have been talking about what makes us feel safe, valued and respected both inside and outside of the classroom, and using this to help us build a happy community.
There have been so many new people and experiences in just our first few weeks, what else could be around the corner?
