Hello, from our students and teachers.

Hello from Jason Bentley and 4/5 B

This week our grade 5 class members have had a fantastic time on camp. This got us thinking about some of the possible math activities that could be incorporated into a camping trip.

When putting up a tent, you can discuss the angles made by the tent corners. Ask children if the angles they see are acute, obtuse or right.

Get children to lift backpacks (of age-appropriate weight) and compare. Ask them to determine which one is heavier? Additionally, viewing map scales and dealing with tent rods could be great opportunities for lessons in measuring length.

Keep a tab of all the expenses including the costs of fuel/transport, food, etc. Then, ask questions like – How much did we start with? How much did we spend on food? What are we left with?

Give your child a supermarket catalogue to make a list of what you can buy for $50.00. Remember to allow for the number of people in your family and the days you will be away.

Draw a map of your camping area. Include compass directions and a key. You could even include estimated walking times between different points of interest.

Take a tally of the different birds that you see over a period of time. Create a graph that shows your results.

Perhaps you could include some of these literacy activities on your next holiday!

Take a damper recipe and ingredients and have your children follow the instructions.

Draw/write instructions on how to set up a tent.

Write in a journal about the days adventures that you have had.

Write a menu for each day that you will be camping.

Snuggle up in your sleeping bag and read with your torch.

Use topics about camping and create acrostic poems.

Here are some camping themed books that you might like to take with you:

  • A Camping Spree With Mr. Magee by Chris Van Dusen
  • Toasting Marshmallows: Camping Poems by Kristine O’Connell George
  • Our Great Big Backyard by Laura Bush
  • Stella and Roy Go Camping by Ashley Wolff
